Can I get Medicine without a Prescription?

Author: Quintin Whitfield

Regardless of the ever-increasing number of online pharmacies offering prescription medication without a valid Rx, it is never legal to get drugs without prescriptions. There are several reasons it is never okay to buy, order, take, or sell prescription drugs without being prescribed by a doctor or health professional:

* Selling prescription medication without prescription is illegal.

Dispensing prescription drugs without prescription is a violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

* Self-prescription is a medically unapproved practice.

The American Medical Association strongly discourages the practice of self-prescription among patients. Without a proper prescription, patients risk taking the wrong medicines that can cause their conditions to worsen with severe side effects.

* No-prescription pharmacies sell counterfeit and unapproved drugs.

Online pharmacies that offer medication without prescription often sell drugs that are counterfeit, tampered with, or unapproved by the FDA. This means that these medications are ineffective, unsafe, and unreliable for public use.

* Buying drugs without a prescription causes patients to miss out on proper health care.

Doctors who prescribe medicines to their patients also offer supervision especially for delicate cases. Without prescriptions, patients are left to monitor their own intake of the medications without proper instructions.

Getting or taking prescription drugs without a valid Rx can even result to abuse and addiction. Most people are under the mistaken notion that a drug that is marketed as treatment is safe for consumption. Unfortunately, prescription drugs are only safe for people to whom they were prescribed. Below are some of the prescription medications that are often abused:

Stimulants

Probably the most popular prescription medication to be abused, stimulants are often used to treat a number of common disorders like depression, asthma, obesity, narcolepsy, and ADHD. Stimulants work by increasing brain activity which results to heightened alertness, energy, and attention. Common formulations of stimulants include methylphenidate (Ritalin), atomoxetine (Strattera), and dextroamphetamine (Adderall).

Opioids

Possibly the most common painkillers, opioid receptors work by attaching themselves to the spinal cord and the brain to prevent pain signals from reaching the brain. Opioids are often prescribed for the treatment of pain and relief of coughs and diarrhea. Commercial versions include meperidine (Demerol), hydrocodone (Vicodin), and oxycodone (OxyContin).

Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants

CNS depressants are prescribed for the treatment of common ailments like anxiety, panic attacks, tensions, and most sleeping disorders. An effective antidepressant, CNS depressants work by increasing GABA neurotransmitter activity in the brain which results to drowsiness and calm. Formulations include diazepam (Valium), pentobarbital sodium (Nembutal), and alprazolam (Xanax).

Tips on preventing abuse of prescription drugs

1. Take only medications that are prescribed by a doctor for your use. Never take medications that are not prescribed for you by your doctor. The fact that a medication worked well on another does not automatically mean that it will work for you.

2. Stick to instructions religiously. Your doctor can determine the right dosage, length of treatment, and amount of medication you can take. Taking more than what is instructed can lead to abuse so follow your doctor's instruction properly.

3. Keep medications out of reach of children. Prescription medications should be kept locked away when not in use. Children and teens may try taking these medications when they are easily available out of curiosity.

Which is better for sleep, Ambien, Valium or Phenergan?
the ambien rx was from 08/2004, the valium from 07/04 and the phenergan from 08/06. Don’t know if 2 of them are even still good. I just need some sleep tonight without the drowsiness for work tomorrow.

drugs don’t really “go bad” after the expiration date, they just lose potency from sitting on the shelf, so the “5 mg” or whatever, is probably something like 4.2 mg. don”t sweat it. phenergan is for coughs, valium will give you a “hangover” – take the Ambien. you’ll be fine.

I take Valium frequently. If it comes + in a drug test, what is a valid excuse for taking them without a Rx?
The drug test is for a intership at a hosiptal. Do they test for Valium? and if so, what is a excuse i can use to why it is in my system. BTW i do not have a presciption.

they test for all narcotic agents and illegal drugs. sorry there is no valid excuse that ANY medical facility will accept if you’re taking narcotics without a prescription. that’s just how the system works… no employer is going to hire someone into a medical position that is taking prescription medicine that isnt their own prescription. it’s too much of a risk to their business that you might steal drugs. to the other poster… valium is still used very commonly in the elderly and in patients that have spinal/back surgeries and diseases that cause muscle spasms

Practically Yes, there is a black market of drugs, some pharmacist spend without prescription and inclusive sell pills by the unit.

I’ve actually considered buying Lexapro online because it’s soooo pricey otherwise. I’ve heard many people have good success with buying drugs online – they’re likely from India or somewhere, but they’re just what you buy here. Phizer has a patent on Lexapro until 2012, so no generic is available in the U.S., thus keeping the price high. You can get it (the generic) overseas, though, which is why in this case it is so much cheaper to buy online. I run the risk of it being a fishy site, getting ripped off, esp. if the site turns out to be fraudulent and is pulled off by regulators.

Some of these sites must be fine because I visit a forum for people with depression and many people have visited these sites since AD’s are so out of control $$$ in the U.S. I suggest getting opinions on sites first before buying. It is not illegal to my knowledge because the site asks you why you need it, then supposedly a doctor they have on staff is consulted and approves your request. Like that really happens, tho… There is no way YOU will be punished. You can possibly get jipped dealing with shady sites, though.

Xanax and Valium Addiction – What is your personal story?
About 5 years ago I sought out help for anxiety and was prescribed atenenol by my Primary Care Physician, but it never seemed like enough. I moved to Chicago and seen another doctor for insomnia and was prescribed xanax, but I told him it made me feel terrible and I couldn’t take it. He prescribed me valium and I finally found the drug that was right for me. I started out taking about 10 mg twice daily and that went great for about 2 years when I find myself in an incredibly difficult situation. I was still having the doctor’s nurse give me xanax and by that time I had a huge bag of it. I took it very randomly, maybe 1 or 2 x per month. The bag was stolen from me but I didn’t care because I really didn’t take it. When my next RX was phoned in, I had to take it to take my mind off my living condition because I felt like hiding in a room. i was then up to 2 mg 3 x daily, but I didn’t take nearly that much. I was prescribed this much because I lied to the Doctor about building up tolerance. I just wanted to make sure I would have drugs if I needed them. I never though I would be able to stop taking valium because I would test myself and the day after I would have to start taking again because I was extremely irritated and had neck tension like you would not even imagine.

Suddenly, I was thrust into a position with my life partner/ business partner where I was to hire, manage, and ensure all legal actions were taken that are required; for over 30 Long Haul Truck Drivers. Which BTW, to me are the scum of the earth, as I am white collar. Even though I work out, I do shower, shave, have a weekly haircut, and dress nicely. This alone is like red flags for drug drivers to give you shit. So I became hardcore, which is out of character for me and I began to take the xanax I had built up.

Being able to stop taking xanax has always been a breeze for me. The valium was the problem. However, a recent incident forced me to no longer have any meds and I went two weeks without anything (which were by the way hell). I went to the doctor and was prescribed xanax and all my symptoms went away. I was shocked!! Shocked that I no longer require valium after years of use. I don’t even want it at all.

Does anyone have a benzo story they would like to share. It is facinating. I sincerely never ever thought that I would ever ever ever be able to live without taking valium. It was the sole drug that I believed with every bone in my body that I would not be able to function without.

The xanax alone is working great though.

I have suffered from severe anxiety since i was about 10 (i am 27 now) I am constantly in fear of getting sick. Just minor things like a cold or flu. It was new years eve 6 years ago and I was bartending. A few coworkers were stomach sick so i panicked and called my cousin and told her about it ( i was always able to tell her my anxiety) I left work early and went to see her. She gave me a zanax. I felt amazing. All my worries and fears left me. Since then I have been struggling to not take them. I have been given them from Drs. I will get a bottle of 60 1 mg tablets and finish them in 5 days or less. I have been clean for a month now I AM DYING. I can not handle my anxiety
