PREGNANCY: A limited number of studies of hydroxyzine in pregnant women suggests that there may be a relationship between its use in the first trimester of pregnancy and congenital abnormalities in the fetus. Therefore, hydroxyzine should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy.

NURSING MOTHERS: It is not known if hydroxyzine is excreted into breast milk. In general, antihistamines are not recommended for use during breastfeeding because they can cause stimulation or seizures in newborns.

SIDE EFFECTS: Hydroxyzine can commonly cause sedation, tiredness, sleepiness, dizziness, disturbed coordination, drying and thickening of oral and other respiratory secretions, and stomach distress. Hydroxyzine may also cause confusion, nervousness, irritability, blurred vision, double vision, tremor, loss or appetite, or nausea. Hydroxyzine should be used with caution (if at all) in persons with narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy (enlarged prostate gland), hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and asthma.

DOSING: Hydroxyzine has its maximal effect about 30 to 60 minutes after it is taken. Its effects last for 4 to 6 hours. The recommended dose for treating pruritus is 25 mg given 3 or 4 times daily. When used for sedation, the recommended dose is 50 to 100 mg. Anxiety and tension are managed with 50 to 100 mg 4 times daily. Hydroxyzine can be taken with or without food.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Hydroxyzine adds to (exaggerates) the sedating effects of alcohol and other drugs that can cause sedation such as the benzodiazepine class of anti-anxiety drugs [for example, diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), clonazepam (Klonopin), alprazolam (Xanax)], the narcotic class of pain medications and its derivatives [for example, oxycodone and acetaminophen (Percocet), hydrocodone/acetaminophen (Vicodin), guaifenesin (Dilaudid), Codeine, propoxyphene (Darvon)], the tricyclic class of antidepressants [for example, amitriptyline (Elavil), imipramine (Tofranil), desipramine (Norpramin)], and certain antihypertensive medications [for example, clonidine (Catapres), propranolol (Inderal)]. Hydroxyzine can also intensify the drying effects of other medications with anticholinergic properties [for example, dicyclomine (Bentyl), bethanechol (Urecholine), Probanthine, amitriptyline (Elavil), chlorpromazine (Thorazine)]. When using these drugs, the dose of hydroxyzine may require reduction, therefore.

    Valium, pregnancy and birth defects?
If someone is taking a low dose valium daily … and then discovers they are pregnant… and immediately discontinues the valium use at about 6 -7 weeks gestation… is there still a risk for birth defects? I cannot find info anywhere on at what point in a pregnancy valium poses this danger.

In theory yes, but from what I know from experience ( I am on a high dose of Xxanix) I have 2 little girls with nothing wrong with them. Maybe talk to your dr about your concerns, after you see on ultra sound and hear your baby it might make you feel better. I hope you have a fast, healthy pregancy and good luck!!

Positive evidence of human fetal risk exists.
Potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks (e.g. life threatening situations or serious illness).

      FDA Pregnancy Risk Categories D

Benzodiazepine, Sedative for treatment of anxiety.

      Fetal Risk

The drug is teratogenic in animals at high doses producing skeletal anomalies and by affecting the fetal neurodevelopment it causes cerebellar defects, reduced motivation and increased male aggression in the adult offspring exposed in utero.

Unknown transfer through the placenta but other benzodiazepines cross the placenta freely.

Suggested possible association between in utero exposure to alprazolam and triazolam with congenital anomalies , the number of exposures was too small to make a conclusion.

Chronic maternal use of the drug throughout pregnancy can cause neonatal withdrawal.

Nothing more than reassurance so please answer!?
You would think I have never been pregnant but here goes. I am 14 weeks along and it has been 8 years since my last. I am 37 and just so freaked out this time. You can see by my other questions I am not handling this one very well. I don’t know why, maybe it’s my age I don’t know. I felt so horrible the first trimester and feel great now. My other biggest concern is I was taking valium the first 2 weeks of my pregnancy because I was with my dad watching him die and I didn’t know I was pregnant. I was smoking sooo much and after he died found out I was 6 weeks. Im terrified of the damage I have done, Im terrified about everything. It’s going well, I have no spotting, no cramps nothing abnormal Im just freaked out. Every time something hurts I post it on here and I look like a nut case. Im even tempted to post my number to get some moral support. Im just scared and I think once I feel the baby it will all kick in. I stay at home all day so I have plenty of time to freak and I make good use of my time. If you are around 14 weeks then please just tell me it’s all normal and we’re in the same boat..lol Thanks for letting me freak out….
OMG I feel like I Just got 11 new best friends, thanks for the answers so far. you can im me at this same id. and I would love to hear from you all, you are great ty!

    Abortion Question, need advice…?
I found out I was pregnant a few days ago via two pregnancy tests. Before I go any further, I should say I am very liberal and I am 100 percent pro-choice, so please don’t bother using any propaganda or judgmental retorts to answer this question, it won’t get anything but bad karma for you and a thumbs down from me.

I am in the VERY early stage, maybe just two weeks pregnant, since I JUST missed my period. I am 25 and I am not married, I live with my boyfriend, and neither one of us is ready to have a kid. We both decided abortion would be the best route for our life, as well as the undeveloped zygote.

I would love a response from someone who had an abortion, and I would like to know the process and the pain as well. I doubt I will do a general anesthetic because I am deathly afraid of needles, so I was wondering if they give you gas or any valium to sedate you a bit?

I also read about many women’s success with herbal abortions, does anyone know about this? It has been kept pretty hidden, but my mother told me she tried it and was successful, taking massive doses of Vitamin C, which increases estrogen and blocks the progesterone needed to keep the zygote clinging to the wall.

    Thanks.

You have a number of different options here; I highly recommend the community at http://community.livejournal.com/abortioninfo — it is a very active forum with tons of well-organized information. Plus, the members are super knowledgeable, friendly, and supportive.

I tried the Vitamin C regimen (plus some other herbs) — you can look up the Sister Zeus web site to read more about herbal methods. It didn’t work for me and I got a yucky burn on my tongue from all the Vitamin C. The consensus seems to be that if you’re young and healthy, herbal methods are unlikely to be successful unless the pregnancy is already weak. I ended up having a “medical” (non-surgical) procedure, and that went OK. It seemed right at the time–something noninvasive.

For surgical abortion, many clinics offer something called “twilight sedation,” which apparently is strong enough to make the procedure painless, but doesn’t knock you out completely.

Just so you know, the convention is to calculate the length of a pregnancy (gestational age, I think) based on the date of the woman’s last menstrual period, not the date of conception. So, on average, by the time you miss your period you are considered to be four months pregnant.

In a few weeks I’m going to detox from opiates at home. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. HELP!?
I have been battling this addiction for over 4 years now. I started out taking a 1/2 of a 500mg vicodin once a week, just when I got a really bad tension headache. I quickly realized I felt “good” when I took them, so gradually started taking more often. That continued for about a year & a 1/2. Then I got pregnant. I was able to stop cold turkey, however I did take a total of about 5 pills throughout my whole pregnancy when aches & pains were really bad. I have always had a high tolerance for pain medications, so otc tylenol DOES NOT help me. So the minute you deliver a baby, guess what, they prescribed me a shiny new rx for darvocet. So since the day my baby was born in Aug. of ’07, I have not had 1 clean day. I have extreme depression, & little to no help or support from my husband. The pills make me feel not so sad, & gave me the energy I needed to “handle my business”. Over time my habit has increased tremendously..& I’m now taking at least 20 10/325mg Norco daily. I do have my own rx, but that lasts me all of 4 or 5 days, so then I start my “hunt” for a score. I buy 4 different peoples rx’s & am spending over $700 monthly on just the pills. Not to mention that while I’m on pills I smoke a pack a day, drink red bull & Starbucks like there’s no tomorrow, & have manic shopping habits. I have NO self control. My habit is costing my family everything we have. We can longer pay our bills, & my kids don’t have a mommy. The energy the pills used to give me went away a long time ago, now I barely have the motivation to shower. I can’t live like this anymore.
I have hit my bottom, & I HAVE to quit.
We can’t afford rehab, & my husband makes to much $$ to qualify for any special “scholarships”…so basically I’m screwed. The other night I decided to talk to my G’pa about helping us to pay for a detox program. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. My G’pa thinks so highly of me, & to tell him that I’m a drug addict was so painful. He has bailed us out sooooo many times financially in the past, he just can’t afford to pay for it. I should’ve asked him for help a long time ago…but…woulda, coulda, shoulda isn’t going to help now.
So I basically “told on myself” so now I have no other option BUT to quit. Since I can’t afford to pay for rehab, I have to do this at home. The plan is, my mom & husband are going to take a week off work & basically nurse me back to health…but I’m SCARED!!! I’ve heard so many horror stories.
I’m writing this in hopes that someone out there has some advice for me. I’m terified of the pain, diahrrea, nausea, bone aches, insomnia…all of it. I’ve read all these “recipes” that are supposed to help with wd symptoms, but believe it or not, I’m scared of taking drugs…I know funny right. I would like to be able to do this with ibuprofen, tylenol pm, immodium, & hot baths….but is that just ridiculous for me to even think that possible?? I don’t want to use suboxyn, or valium or any other substance to wd because my addictive personality will become addicted to them..I just know it.
If anyone out there has any advice for me..PLEASE help. I’m planning to do this the week after Thanksgiving, I would like to be back to my normal self by Christmas.

ok, I cannot tell you how many times I’ve seen this go wrong. Death is a very common side effect. The seizures alone could kill you. I know you can’t afford this but you can’t afford to leave your kids w/o a mom and a husband w/o a wife. Take a loan, go in debt. If you make enough money that you don’t qualify for gov’t assistance than you have some resources. Don’t do this solo. I promise you something real bad and scary will happen, someone will dial 911, you’ll get rushed to the hospital, and the bills will come anyways but there will be the chance you’re already dead.
