What class of drugs is “Atarax”? Is it a benzo?
I need to know for a drug test if I should bring the RX? I know Xanax and Valium are benzos but I didn’t know about this one.

Atarax will not cause a false positive on a urine test. Atarax (hydroxyzine HCl) is unrelated chemically to the phenothiazines, reserpine, meprobamate, or the benzodiazepines. It is classed as a piperazine antihistamine. Still, you need to inform the tester about all medications you are taking.

      Here’s the clinical stuff:

Atarax is not a cortical depressant, but its action may be due to a suppression of activity in certain key regions of the subcortical area of the central nervous system. Primary skeletal muscle relaxation has been demonstrated experimentally. Bronchodilator activity, and anti-histaminic and analgesic effects have been demonstrated experimentally and confirmed clinically, An antiemetic effect, both by the apomorphine test and the veriloid test, has been demonstrated. Pharmacological and clinical studies indicate that hydroxyzine in therapeutic dosage does not increase gastric secretion or acidity and in most cases has mild antisecretory activity. Hydroxyzine is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and Atarax’s clinical effects are usually noted within 15 to 30 minutes after oral administration.

For symptomatic relief of anxiety and tension associated with psychoneurosis and as an adjunct in organic disease states in which anxiety is manifested.

Useful in the management of pruritus (itching) due to allergic conditions such as chronic urticaria (hives) and atopic and contact dermatoses (rashes) , and in histamine-mediated pruritus.

As a sedative when used as pre-medication and following general anesthesia, Hydroxyzine may potentiate meperidine (Demerol) and barbiturates, so their use in pre-anesthetic adjunctive therapy should be modified on an individual basis. Atropine and other bella-donna alkaloids are not affected by the drug. Hydroxyzine is not known to interfere with the action of digitalis in any way and it may be used concurrently with this agent.

I’ve dispensed this for over 30 years. The most common problem with this drug is drowsiness.

      Hope this helps.

Is Atarax (used to treat anxiety) in the same class of drugs as Xanax and Valium?

    • Anonymous says:

I don’t think so I know Atarax is kind of like a strong benadryl they use for anxiety to relax you but that’s only one reason Atarax is used and my husbands presciption doesn’t say anything about anxiety on it in the uses section. That’s what he uses it for too.

Do Valium Cravings Ever Go Away?
so i quit valium (a class C drug when unprescribed) quite a while ago now

    i’m talking over a year

well that was when i “beat” my addiction

but it’s like it’s been fighting back ever since

every so often i get these cravings for it and they last for quite a while

usually when i’m thinking about something stressful

and it’s like downing a handful is the only option to stop the pain

    sorry to get all deep

i just need to know if they’ll ever go away?

please try and help me out

    cheers
    was on it for years

can’t remember an exact how long for precisely

i was on like, well alot a day for a few years

then 10mg a day bout a year or so later

They may or may not ever go away. All I can suggest is to continue to fight the urges as best you can with deep breathing and re-framing.

Class A drugs and valium ????????/?
i asked my friend what to pack for a music fest and she said lots of class a’s and valium incase of an overdose? what does valium do if you overdose?

    • Anonymous says:

Valium will do nothing to assist in an Overdose. Are you sure that’s not what she’s telling you to bring to actually take? I don’t recommend.

do urine tests tes for specific drugs within the class?
So, if I have a valid RX for ativan yet took some old valium I had, do the general tests reflect the *specific* med, or just as a Benzo?
Well, “Mister”.. I am not talking about anything to do with Marijuana specifically, so THC plays no part in this.
I verified that they generally test for the class only, as someone else answered. So thanks for the help.

    • Anonymous says:

No, they don’t usually test for specific drugs. The routine urine drug screens look for benzodiazepine metabolites in general. Similarly opiates, or tricyclics are tested for as a class…not as say morphine or amtriptyline.
Specific tests are available but usually in special labs, and they cost more.
