Too Much Radiation Can Cause Us Harm
Author: Lisa Ginger
Obviously, we are exposed to many sources of radiation in everyday life and no matter what we do, we cannot avoid them. The radiation that we receive from the earth is very minimal and has been around since the beginning of time (and it will always be around). However, some of our own activities has in fact increased the amount of radiation we are exposed to during our everyday lives.
The detonation of nuclear weapons releases massive amounts of radiation. The debris from a nuclear blast is radioactive and eventually settles to the earth. Nuclear reactors also generate radioactive materials, but the radiation created from reactors is in most cases contained.
X-rays used in medical and dental procedures are definitely contributors to man-made radiation. We all need x-rays from time to time, but it is best not to overdue it. This is why medical professionals leave the room when they x-ray a patient. Nuclear medicine, which may even be used to treat cancer, is another factor adding to the radiation doses people recieve. The use of radioactive materials in research settings can also be a hazard. It is advised that anyone exposed to radiation in their daily work environment take the proper precautions.
Many products for sale to consumers are radioactive. Some of these include T.V.'s, luminous-dial watches, smoke detectors, tobacco products and building materials. In addition, cellphones are a possible cause of radiation. At this time, it is currently unknown how much radiation these sources add to our exposure.

Isn’t “freedom” over rated?
Look what freedom gets us- Right wing talk radio, religous zealots, Fox News, George Bush, obeisity, cigarette smoking, global warming, and the list could go on and on. Isn’t it time for a stalinist type dictatorship to keep the masses in line.
FIY…..I’m veery familiar with the so called “evils” of stalinism. I think Dissent should be crushed. No one was murdered, they were getting exactrly what they had coming.
Why don’t you direct this question to the masses who have actually experienced a Stalinist type dictatorship? Only those who know the difference are qualified to answer. What they have to say would surely be a real eye opener to those of us who take freedom for granted. Most of us would be in line for the expressway to Siberia on the first day!
Do you think soldiers should be completely banned from smoking?
WASHINGTON (CNN) — You’ve seen the iconic picture of a soldier with a cigarette dangling from his mouth, but that could soon be a thing of the past.
A new study commissioned by the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs recommends a complete ban on tobacco, which would end tobacco sales on military bases and prohibit smoking by anyone in uniform, not even combat troops in the thick of battle.
According to the study, tobacco use impairs military readiness in the short term. Over the long term, it can cause serious health problems, including lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. The study also says smokeless tobacco use can lead to oral and pancreatic cancer.
However, the suggested ban does not sit well with many in uniform, including retired Gen. Russel Honore, best known for coordinating military relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina-affected areas with an ever-present stogie. He said soldiers at war need to puff.
“When you’re tired and you’ve been going days on end with minimum sleep, and you are not getting the proper meals on time, that hit of tobacco can make a difference,” said Honore, who was in charge of the Army’s training programs before he retired.
Other soldiers questioned whether this was a good time to stamp out smoking, given the Army’s concern with a high suicide rate.”For some, unfortunately, they feel that smoking is their stress relief. Well if you take it away, what is the replacement?” said Sgt. 1st Class Gary Johnson.

Edit: Septimus Winkle, i put forth both sides of the debate from CNN…these are not my views..i just want to know how most people feel..but thanks!
Smoking doesn’t relieve stress. Stopping smoking can cause a lot of it. Banning smoking amongst soldiers would be wrong. It would treat them as second class citizens with fewer rights than civilians. Just treat them the same as anyone else.
There is some irony in the army getting like this. The army probably did more to increase smoking than any other organisation.
A friend uses me. All the time. He expects me to provide him with what he wants. And he never says thank you.?
I have a friend. I’ve known him for years.
He’ll come over and say ‘do u want to smoke a b?’ I’ll say sure and lay some down. Then he’ll say I didn’t put enough in. It’s because he doesn’t have any, and he expects me to throw down $60 worth just like that.
Or he will invite us over ‘Do you want to smoke a j?’ I’ll get there and wait and wait for him to pull it out. Then he will impatiently say, ‘so are you going to roll that or not?’
We will be hanging out with friends, and he will shout, ‘so who’s going to smoke me up?’
We’re all adults. Grown.
A few friends have decided to hide what they have, so when he comes over, they say they dont have any.
I’ve tried that too. But he’s good friends with our guy. So if I say I dont have any, he knows I’m lying.
We’ve tried talking with him about it. But he doesn’t listen or care. He just tunes us out, or makes it into an argument.
This isn’t a person I can just not be friends with or not be around.
Whenever he has anything… he makes it up to be this huge massive honor that he’s smoking us up. I normally remind him that I smoke him up everyday.
How can I get this guy to buy his own, or at least stop expecting to have mine. I might as well just give him $40 a month instead.
I still want to be friends with him. If I become enemies its going to suck…. because we see each other a lot. So any advice to ditch him will be rated low.
even his family complains about it. They will say something like, so where’s your stuff. Then he’ll reply that he doesnt have any. Then his family will ask him if he expects his friends to support him.
His family hangs out with me more than him. Because I can throw down. He got a bit offended at first… but got over it.
I think I’m just going to ask my guy to not tell him when I pick something up. I’m sure he’s fed up with being used as well.
u gotta try to break him out of that habit by doing something else together that he likes better if that’s possible.(sports, etc.)
Getting blood and swab for life insurance but…?
My husband and I are both insured as “smokers”. We quit smoking cigarettes more than a year ago and the other day I got the brilliant idea to have our policy amended to rate us as “non-smokers”. I just came to realize that I smoked a joint over 3 weeks ago. It was the first time since high school (I’m 28) and I don’t plan on doing it ever again. It was totally out of character of me!
But are they going to see this in my blood test and classify me as a smoker?? If so, how long should I wait before having the test done?
When testing the swabs and blood profiles they test for cotinine, which is a byproduct of anything that is smoked or tobacco products. Cotinine will typically stay in the blood stream for roughly 10 days. If you’ve only had one joint 3 weeks ago and no other tobacco products in the last year, it’s highly unlikely that it will even show up on the tests.
Technically becuase you smoked within the last year you are classed as a smoker and I’m not telling you to lie, but chances of them finding out are very slim if this was just a one off.
My mom lied to me about smoking, what should I do?
Okay, there is a lot I have to say. So, beware. lol
My mom is 39 years old. I have an older brother who is 19 and I am 13. I don’t know my dad’s age. Yes, I appreciate having a roof over my head, good food to eat. My family is middle class and we are good in the economy and so on. My mother’s heart rate runs like at fifty percent and that is something you should pay attention too.
I have severe Asthma. It sucks, it really does. I can’t go to public school its so severe. Last time I did, I got mono from drinking out of a water fountain. lol I’ve had a pretty rough medical history. Such as, being 18 months old and being shocked every few seconds for some kind of cancer test or something. A lot worse has happened, but I don’t feel like going through medical records. Oh, and she ALWAYS tells people how hard it was to WATCH me be put through operations. When, she had a CHOICE to watch or not. I was forced. I didn’t have a choice for five metal wires to be shoved down my nose. Or to be stuck in the hospital with tubes in my throat (through my nose, down my thoart to my stomach) and not be able to eat for 13 days. Not lieing either.
My mother and father preached to me and everyone around me that smoking was terrible. She swore up and down to me that she never smoked. Told doctors that no one in the house did, whatever.I remember vividly asked, “Mom, do you smoke?” after I had found one smashed in the driveway. She said, “No, sweetheart. I’d never touch one of those fifthly things. I promise.”
I was about ten then. I was ignorant and I believed her. But, that didn’t stop me from paying more close attention.
So, about in May, I walked outside on morning to go to dance. And, (guess what?) she was sitting on the steps with one of them things hanging out of her mouth. Her cousin was standing there without one, (I know he smokes. It bugs me and I HATE IT. HE STINKS THE HOUSE UP WITH SMOKE, well, she does too)
So, I ran to the car. I threw my dance bag in the front seat, calmed my breathing (mostly temper. I have anger issues.) and walked back to the house. And there her cousin was, with a have smoked cig in his mouth. Where did he get that? I wonder. He took it from here to cover up for her!
Okay, well, my dad took me to dance a few minutes later. In the car, I asked, “Dad, does Mom smoke?”
He said, “Well, no! Of course not.”
I texted a friend. I was MAD by then.
She said she had known five months before. Her mother advised her not to say anything, because she had no dog in that race.
I looked at my dad, and said, “(Friend’s name) has known for five months!”
All I got from him was, “Well. Sorry.” In a tone screaming; Big baby. I don’t have time for you.
Was I really overreacting?
Well, since I was mad, I started crying and shaking. My ribs hurt the next day from shaking so bad. So, my dad sent me into Burger King (random, right?) saying “I need to clean my face up. My mascara is running.”
I wasn’t wearing any mascara. He really sent me in there to give my mom a heads up on that I knew.
She never said anything. I found everything. Where she hides her cigs, where he nicotine gum (weird) is at. and I’ve seen her numerous times with one in her mouth, smoke blowing through her nose.
One day, I was going on a two week croos-country trip with the friend i mentioned before. Her grandparents invited us, but my mom wasn’t going. She stayed with me and her cousin at a hotel. I was really upset because she refused to let my dad come and I didn’t get to say bye to him because she wanted to be gone before he was home. The night I was leaving, I went swimming in the hotel we stayed at. My mom raced me two laps in the pool, jumped out saying, “My heart is racing. I’m done for the night.”
Since, it was late and she was done swimming and I had a long two weeks ahead, I got out too. Our hotel was an outside. And there was a stairwell right next to our door. Her cousin said, “Don’t look at the stairwells. She’s on the phone.”
Okay, well, i went to the room. I paused for a second, and i didn’t hear her say anything. I smelt smoke, so i busted into the room and released my anger out on a pillow. Poor pillow.
She came and and we had to share a bed that night. Only two beds in the hotel room. I coughed, gagged and was breathing terribly that night because SOMEONE smelt like a gasbomb.
So, a month later, two days ago, I was walking out of the hospital from getting a chest x-ray. Mom usually goes with me every time, and I wanted her to go this time because a male was giving me my chest x-ray. AWKWARD!
She said no and she would wait for me (with her cousin) in the lobby. After I was finished, I went to the lobby. No mother, no cousin. So, I looked around the other waiting rooms and the bathroom. Nope. Nothing.
I warned you it was long!!! btw, this is what happened over a span of like three years. So, yeah, its gonna be long. Don’t read it if you “have a life” it won’t bother me at all.
She was outside by the car smoking with her cousin. I had to ride home with the awful smell. She refused to roll down the windows or try to turn on the AC. And she isn’t trying to quit. When you are trying to quit, you don’t smoke 4-5 times a day. She uses the gum when I’m in the hospital so she doesn’t have to leave. I’ve done my homework, ppl. I know the details. I am trying to be mature, but anger issues kind of has its limits. I can’t control when I get angry or upset, and if i do, its hard to reverse it. I try to mature but it never works out that way because she ends up pissing me off again. I cant go to realtives. Only the household and her cousin know about this habit.
She doesn’t want me to smoke? Duh. It would kill me. I can’t even breathe second-hand, Imagine what the real thing would do. I’ve been sick since I was born because of that posion.
You can’t make an addict quit. They have to want to quit on their own. You need to grow up & quit throwing temper tantrums. Your childish little fits aren’t helping the situation. Face the fact that your mother smokes and there’s not a thing that you can do about it.
