Side Effects of Stop Smoking - Tips to Recognize Them

Author: Nan Sipes

When I finally licked my smoking habit fifteen years ago, I had so many symptoms of the side effects of stop smoking that I began to believe I might actually be sick! If you have made up your mind to quit, let me give you a few tips to help you get through your withdrawal period. It's a short phase, but it can be tough!

Wonderfully pleasant people can turn into cranky, irritable and moody folks shortly after their last cigarette. Why? It is because their body is craving nicotine. Take a brisk walk or a hot relaxing bath instead of giving in and lighting up. This symptom will usually last 2 to 4 weeks.

Hunger pains will attack you all hours of the day. Since your mouth isn't busy smoking you get the urge to eat. Your brain no longer knows if it should crave nicotine or food. Try to eat healthier than you did when you smoked. Try crunchy raw vegetable snacks to keep your mouth busy. Again, this symptom should pass in 2 to 4 weeks.

You may develop coughing, post nasal drip or dry throat. Actually, these can be good signs. When you cough a lot and bring up phlegm your lungs are trying to clear themselves. It is good to cough up as much as you can. Hopefully, this symptom will only last a few days.

You could develop some dizziness because your body is now getting more oxygen. It just needs a little time to figure out what is going on. Again, this is a good thing and should pass in 1 or 2 days. Meanwhile, when you get up from sitting or lying down, just do it slowly.

The absolute worst symptom of all will be your craving for another cigarette. Nicotine is highly addictive and your brain will not give up begging for it! This symptom will be strongest in the first few days. Unfortunately, the cravings could continue for months or years but they will not be as strong. This side effect needs to be fought with every available resource. First, try waiting it out. It will pass in a few minutes. Also try drinking water, take a walk, or find an online quit smoking support group. A nicotine replacement product would work for this symptom too. You can find one in the form of gum, lozenge, patch, inhaler or spray.

Now you know some of the symptoms of the side effects of stop smoking and what to expect. Freeing yourself of a nicotine addiction may require a great battle but it is a battle that can be won! Arm yourself with the resources that will make you victorious. You can do it! The side effects of stop smoking will not be stronger than you are!

Do you think that pregnant women should be allowed to smoke cigarettes?
It’s a girl in my class at college who’s 6 months pregnant and she smokes everytime we have a break between classes. She even asked another girl for a cigarette and the girl gave it to her! I was shocked. I understand that it’s her body or whatever but it’s another human being inside of her that’s inhaling all of that smoke and I know that it has to have damaging affects on the fetus. What do you guys think? How would you feel if you saw a pregnant girl smoking? Does anyone know the side effects?
I only said “allowed” to smoke because there isn’t a law against not smoking while you’re pregnant. I don’t condone this one bit, don’t get me wrong!

Smoking during pregnancy can lead to premature birth and other birth defects. But stress can be a lot more harmful. If a woman was to get pregnant unexpectedly, and was a smoker and couldn’t or didn’t quit right away, the stress she would put her body through trying to quit in the 2nd trimester could be a lot more harmful than smoking at all. I became pregnant unexpectedly and am a smoker. I was finding it hard to quit, which is horrible I know, but I was very open about it with my doctor, and he informed me of all this. Needless to say I thankfully quit during my first trimester and my son is very healthy, wasn’t premature and had no problems. In fact, he was quite large. But some people get lucky when it comes to this, and others don’t. Smoking does cause serious birth defects in some cases, which is not fair to the unborn child.

does the mirena iud have hormones and what r side effects for women over 35 and smoke?

    • Anonymous says:

It does have hormones. Personally, I wouldn’t consult the US literature, I would read the Canadian pamphlet. There is a ton of information there that isn’t listed in the US version. I have had a really bad experience with the Mirena…weight gain, high blood pressure, diminished vision, depression – things which are listed as side effects in the Canadian pamphlet, but not the US.

The pamphlet doesn’t mention any risks associated with smoking.

Also, if you have a chance, read my Mirena blog for a detailed list of my experiences:

    Smoking kills your eggs??
Okay, It is hypothesized that smoking reduces the number of oocytes (eggs) in the ovary as women who smoke enter menopause earlier than nonsmokers.WTF does that mean?? I am about to be 21, I smoke cigs, about 8 a day, and I have been told that if I don’t stop I won’t be able to conceive. Is this true? I want to have a baby, but at the same time if i don’t have a cig I go crazy! It is so calming and I have a stressful job and life, but who doesn’t you know. I’m not trying to make excuses for myself and I am aware of the side effects of smoking cigs, but the way I look at it IM GONNA DIE ANYWAY, might as well live my life happy. So anyway, if you smoke cigs, and my bf and I both smoke weed “occasionally” (only at parties and stuff like that) How bad does it hurt our chances? We can quit the pot at anytime. If its hurting us. I just wanted to know how BAD it is hurting us. Has anyone gotten preggo, or known a couple that got preggo, when both partners smoked?? Please help and for the non-smokers be considerate with the comments okay I know there are people out there that absolutely HATE cigs! Trust me I use to be one of them. :) But I like it and Im just wanting to know how bad it is hurting us and if/when I need to stop. Thanks

hi there, i used to suffer from the same “disease”, if i didn’t smoke i would go mad, when ur life style is stressful u just wnt to get rid of it some hw and fags is d easy way out.
I can tell u that smoking those reduce ur fertility and chances to conceive in the near future.
Weed is even worst then fags cuz it has much more chemical substances in it.
I’m 20 weeks pregnant and both me and my hubby used to smoke fags i stopped and he still smokes but very few a week. i tell u being smoke free is d best, my hands hair and clothes don’t stink anymore nor does my home.
anyway i hope the link below will help.
      good luck

Does smoking marijuana on the father’s side have an effect of the newborn ?
Except for the lower sperm count and the possible difficulty of getting the woman pregnant, are there any genetic side effects that can be transmitted to the baby from the long-term smoking of marijuana?

I’m not having a kid in the near future, but my boyfriend smokes almost every day and I’m just curious cuz I’d love to end up with him…
The thing is that I’m a very healthy person, vegetarian, non-spoker and non-drinker so my boyfriend’s habit is turning me away from the idea of having a child from him, ever.

I was told by my doctors/midwives that drug use in Moms and Dads could have an effect. I don’t know the full stats, but why don’t you talk with you care giver about it. They could give you information that you may want to pass on to father. Sounds like you are extremely conscious of what goes into your body… that’s great! I can see why you are considering not having kids with this guy. Good luck.

What are the side effects of quitting smoking for a woman?

    • Anonymous says:

I quit for 4 months and gained 20 pounds. You should definitely join a gym when you quit because smoking speeds up metabolism.

Other than that I cant think of any other negative side effects.
