    How long after quitting smoking does weight gain take place?
    I quit smoking 6 months ago and have not really gained any new weight. I work out regularly and eat well, which isn’t different from my lifestyle when I was a smoker, so I was [nervously] awaiting weight gain since I haven’t changed my routine. I hear that most people who quit will gain some weight b/c of decreased metabolism, eating more, etc. but I’m hoping that I’m one of those people who don’t! If I was to gain weight, wouldn’t I have by now?

      First of all, congratulation!!! It’s a difficult addiction to break.

      Since you haven’t experienced any weight gain yet, you probably won’t. There are a couple things that usually cause weight gain -
      1. Nicotine withdrawl give some of the same feelings as being hungry so often people will eat to satisfy that “hunger”.
      2. There is a repititive hand-to-mouth action associated with smoking and continuing that action using food often satisfies that action.

      After 6 months, while you may still have psychological cravings for a cigarette at times, the nicotine addiction should be gone. Keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll be fine.

    Advice on giving up smoking and weight gain?
    I really want to give up smoking and am seeing my doctor to talk through options this week. However, I have heard that even if I don’t eat any more than usual I will gain weight as smoking increases your metabolism. Is this true? How much on average? I don’t mind gaining a few pounds if it means I am smoke free but would like to know what to expect.

      If you really want to give up and have the will power then your half way there already.Think everyone is different but I stopped smoking nearly 4 weeks ago and have put on about 5 lb but that’s my own fault for swapping the ciggies for nibbles, everything has started tasting so much better so I’m wanting more!I’m now on the nicotine inhalator as well as the patches and that keeps the hand to mouth movement that I’m missing satisfied so I’m not snacking as much. It’s worth the weight gain not to feel like a walking ashtray,if you do put some on then you can always lose it,I feel so much better and I’m sure you will too, good luck x

      edit, just seen that someone has mentioned Chantix, my mum stopped using this and has worked very well for her,she was smoking nearly 30 a day when she started taking it and has now been a non smoker for 8 weeks,it made her feel a little queasy to start with but she thinks its a wonderful drug!

    I want to quit smoking and i am concerned about weight gain. I already excercise about an hour a day, drink lots of water 2 -3l a day,and eat healthy.
    What do you think my chances are of gaining weight?

      very slim if you’re active. I quit smoking years ago and began a healthy lifestyle. What helped me was chewing sugar free gum when i was bored intead of eating which is what most ex smokers do when they can’t smoke. Hope this helps

    Is it really true that you gain weight if you quit smoking?
    I’ve been smoking for the past 5-6 years, I hate it and it’s disgusting. I want to quit. I’ve heard that if you quit smoking you gain a ton of weight, is this true or just one of those myths? If you do gain weight than why? From eating more to fight the cravings or is it some chemical in your body? I’ve heard both of those.

      I’ve quit smoking twice after smoking for about a year, second time was a relapse. After I quit, I made sure I didn’t binge on unneeded junk foods or snacks and started running and lifting weights. Just maintain a healthy diet and exercise and you won’t gain weight. The weight gain is caused because nicotine suppresses your hunger, causing you to eat less and possibly lose weight. Without the nicotine, you’re just hungrier more because there’s nothing suppressing that extra hunger. Good luck!

    Why is it that after a smoker stops smoking completely, they GAIN weight,?
    AND the risk for adult onset diabetes is raised?
    What happens to the hormones after one stops smoking? Everyone I know that has stopped smoking GAINS weight, and this even occurs when the caloric intake is exactly the same.
    Note: I do not smoke at all, I was just curious about this phenomenon.

      Smoking lowers your metabolism, so when you stop you can gain weight. If your intake remains the same, this is only 3-5 lbs and your metabolism stabilizes within a couple months. Many people will try to deal with cravings by eating, so this adds to the weight gain. Scientists do find that the risk for Type 2 diabetes is increased due to this weight gain, but the health benefits of quitting far outweight the cons.
