How Smoking Affects Your Family
Author: Julie Baughan
It is a known fact that smoking is extremely dangerous to your health. Health professionals and government officials have taken various measures in order to educate the public of the different unfavorable effects of smoking to our health. Yet, there are millions of people, who are addicted to their smoking habit. Smoking not only affects the smoker, but also the people around them especially your family. Here are just some ways on how your smoking habit can affect your family. Increase in Health Risks One of the ways how smoking affects your family is through their health. While it is true that smokers increase their risk of developing a variety of illnesses and diseases, this increase in health risk is not only confined to them and it extends to the rest of your family members. Studies have shown that second-hand smokers have an even higher risk of developing cancer and other health ailments compared to the smokers themselves. The term second-hand smokers refer to people who are exposed to the smoke emitted by smokers and their cigarettes. The reason why they are at a higher risk is that compared to smokers, the smoke that they inhale is not filtered. And because most of the harmful chemicals and carcinogens are found in the cigarette smoke, prolonged exposure to the smoke is just like making your entire family smoke a cigarette with the filter torn out. Negative Influence to Your Children Another way how smoking affects your family is by creating a negative influence to your children. As they grow up, your children look up to you and subconsciously model their behavior to mimic their parents. In fact, studies have shown that children that have taken up a smoking habit during their teenage years are those coming from families where one or both of the parents smoke as well. Even though government officials and school administrators do aggressive efforts to discourage teenagers from starting a smoking habit, seeing their parents smoke can be a whole lot more influential and a factor for them to actually become smokers themselves. Depletion of the Family Income With the nations across the world still feeling the effects of the financial crisis that struck them, many families are still coping in stretching the family budget. Smokers unknowingly spend hundreds of dollars each month in order to satisfy their habit by purchasing cigarettes, lowering the household income which is used to purchase basic commodities, pay your children’s tuition fees and your mortgage payments. This depletion of the family income can oftentimes result in tension between you and your spouse regarding financial matters, which can eventually lead to constant arguments, the latter having a psychological effect on your children in the long run. As you can see, the effects of smoking can be far reaching. Being a parent, you would want to make sure that you are able to keep your family safe, protected and their needs supported. Quitting your smoking habit would not only benefit your health. It would also ensure that your family would remain happy, harmonious and healthy.

____________ :The hazards of smoking
This is the essay. Warning everything on here is not real. It’s a “Fake Essay”
“Smoking is a very hazardous habit. It is actually the most dangerous legal consumer product on the face of this planet.” Dr. Melbourne Fox, Director of American Lung Association (Melbourne 25).
In this generation, smokers are everywhere: on TV, movies, and even just walking down the street. Famous, young people smoke and it encourages other younger people to do. Smoking ages range from pre-teens to the elderly. What many people don’t know that that even though it may be cool and hip, it can cause serious problems for them. Smoking is well known to cause many unhealthy habits in people’s lives and even affect peoples’ mental and physical health. Smoking can cause serious health issues. It hurts people besides the smoker. Also, it can cause addiction. Although many smokers claim that smoking helps them, there are many more cons that out-weigh the pros.
Smoking can cause lots of different health problems. In the book, Health Effects of Smoking, by Dr. Carey Melbourne, writes, “Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causing many diseases” (Melbourne 5). Smoking hurts the body, so in general, it deteriorates the smoker’s health. As a result, the smoker ends up with diseases. Dr. William deGraffenried, a researcher, writes about this in his article, “Why Smoke?” He writes, “Smoking causes cancers of the bladders, pharynx, larynx, and lungs. It also causes serious heart and respiratory diseases” (deGraffenried 9). Studies show that people that had smoked or are smoking, had at least one chronic disease. These diseases can be very harmful to the human body and can even result in death. Now that we know what smoking can do to a smoker’s body, let’s see what it can do to others.
Secondhand smoke can be harmful in its own way. It is very dangerous to expose anybody to secondhand smoke. Melbourne writes, “The more secondhand smoke humans are exposed to, the higher the level of these harmful chemicals in your body” (Melbourne 12). Even if a non-smoker does not smoke, just being around smoke can be hazardous to ones’ health. Parents have to be on watch when they smoke. Any type of exposure to their children can be harmful. DeGraffenried writes, “Secondhand smoke is responsible for 20,000 to 1 million children for having asthma attacks and 150,000 to 300,000 infants that are younger than 18 months of age to have lung infection (such as pneumonia and bronchitis)” (deGraffenried 15). Pregnant woman should also be aware of what is around them. Any type of smoke can cause their babies to have low birth weight or can even cause SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Secondhand smoke is really serious and the effects are preposterous. Nonsmokers should be aware and try to avoid it. We should now take a look at another bad habit of smoking, addiction.
Addiction is the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming. This state is as much a threat as anything. Nicotine is found in substantial amounts in all forms of tobacco. Nicotine is a substance that can become addicting for the human body. Once inhaled it reaches the brain within seconds. Melbourne writes about the effect: “ As the nicotine level drops in the blood, smokers feel edgy and agitated–the start of nicotine withdrawal. So in order to relieve the discomforts, the smoker light up another cigarette…then another…and another” (Melbourne 3). As a result the smokers wants more to satisfy their need and end up becoming addicted to it. Melbourne writes, “Although 70% of smokers want to quit and more than 40% try to quit each year, fewer than 5% succeed” (Melbourne 6). This happens because smokers are not only physically addicted to it, they are emotionally linked to it. This trait makes it harder for smokers to break the habit.
Even with all the awful things that smoking can do to our bodies, there are still people that think the opposite. Smokers claim that smoking is not bad for them at all, on the contrary it is good for them. Smoker, Gabriella Dominguez, states,” By smoking I feel relief from all the stress that I have. It helps me relax and lets me focus more.” Dr. Lana Cain, on her website Benefitsofsmoking.com writes, “Smoking burns up an extra 300 calories each day. This method is really good and to stop using it would cause a huge gain of obese people in America”. But is it really worth the risk of getting a fatal disease? While this may be true for the smoker, nonsmokers have different views. The risk of getting sick or hurting others may be more important than relaxing or losing weight..
With so many sickness caused by smoking, the risk of hurting others, and the risk of addiction, it is easy to see why many people do not smoke. Also the ability to cause cancer, low birth weight, and the way smokers depend on it is not a very attractable impression either.

Is smoking ciggerettes bad for your kidneys?
In my science class today my teacher was talking about nicotines effects on the body, and she said it’s bad for most internal organs, she never specified which ones, but part of nicotines cycle to go through your kidneys and liver (so all the crap gets turned into harmless liquid and can be urinated out) and that worried me, because my dad is a heavy smoker which is bad enough, but he only has one kidney (he got in a bad accident as a kid) and it’s making me really scared for my dad…. So does anyone have an idea of whether smoking is bad for your kidneys or not???
Drugs – Alcohol, Tobacco, Solvents and Smoking?
The Drugs are (As said in the title); Alcohol, Tobacco, Solvents and Smoking.
I’ve been researching lately, done most questions but still need help on these:
1) The effects that the drugs would have on a person’s lifestyle
2) Scientific facts about the drugs
3) The effects that the drugs would have on the main body systems, organs and specialized cells
4) Short-term and long-term health problems with smoking, drinking too much alcohol/caffeinated drinks and solvent abuse
5) Positive and negative effects of addiction on the body
Any help will do thanks but would REALLY Appreciate if anybody helps me on all questions ;D x
Thanks a LOT for helping – I’m Really stuck! x
Will give best answer – twice if you wish (on different question) x
XOXOXxx
Alcohol can have a positive effect on someones life (in their eyes), if they do it in a social setting every now and again. Alcohol can be good for you in moderation, so in small doses it can have good points. If people binge drink, like many teenagers these days, it will effect their liver. If they are of a young age this can have an even worse effect as they are still developing. It can lead to alcohol poisoning, liver damage, and can lead people to do things they don’t want to such as unprotected sex and so on.
Tobacco is addictive, so the people come DEPENDANT on it. They are not an ADDICT, as this would affect the way they live. For example a heroin ADDICT would go around beating people up for money for their fix, whereas a doctor is DEPENDANT on heroin as he can get easy access to it and get on with their lives. One fag can potentially trigger cancer, and smoking will increase the chances of getting many cancers, not just of the lung. It can lead to respiratory problems, which can have an effect if the smoker is a sports player and so on.
Solvents are not addictive I don’t think, and will not have a massive effect on a persons lifestyle IF it doesn’t kill them. It can potentially kill you after one go, if not put you in a wheelchair through paralysis and so on. A boy in year 6 at my old school died a few years back because he took solvents and thought he could fly. It messes with your head.
Smoking i’ve kinda writingwith tobacco, but chewing tobacco is really bad for your teeth. Also smoking holds around 400 (?) chemicals.
As for the facts, look at FRANK or sites that try to get you to quite smoking etc, they will have plenty of facts. They’ll have the information for Q2,3 and 4 so just have a quick google.
For Q5, there is always a negative effect on the body, although it may seem positive to the abuser. A smoker will know that being addicted to the nicotine is bad for them, they will feel good after having a fag. Its like a cycle.
Sorry, the *** is meant to say f a g or ciggorette (sp)
Does drinking alcohol have less side effects on your body more than Marujiana?
Besides how drinking alcohol people get into fights alot, I mean like
Marjuiana if you smoke it you get some organ damages, but so does alcohol.
So what else effects does mrjiana has that Alcohol doesnt
Mary jane isnt created from a crazy dude in the basement, you sure you aint confusing it for estacy?
Mary Jane is a plant found on earth
Both can eventually damage your body. Alcohol really started to give me hangovers after a few years of heavy drinking in my 20′s. I think I ruined myself for drinking because after a few beers I would get a hangover.
Can you proofread my essay?
I need to have 400-500 words in this essay. I only have 288. Can you add more stuff to this essay to make it at least 400-500. Can you also correct any bad grammar, please?
Cause and effect of smoking
We were all warned that smoking is harmful for our bodies. We have heard it all over the place. However, some people got addicted to smoking and have a hard time quitting. Smoking kills an average of 450,000 people each year as I searched in the internet. That is more than car accidents, drunk driving, and illegal substances. So why do people continue to smoke? What causes people to even want to smoke when they know the deadly effects?
If you ever thought of smoking, change your mind because smoking is one of the most difficult addictions to break. It kills more people than any disease in the world. Most people who smoke do so because they can’t stop. People like smoking because it makes them feel energized and aware. Some people may start smoking because they saw someone that they liked smoking and thought it was cool. Trying it with friends is another reason some people may smoke. Smoking harms almost every organ in your body, which causes many diseases.
Smoking causes lung cancer heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, and asthma. It also damages teeth, fingers, and hair. Lung cancer is the number one killer in smokers. Some people go see their doctor for help on how to quit smoking. The doctor may give them medication to help their addiction go away. The minute you stop smoking, your body goes to work to repair much of the damage.
If you’re a non-smoker, you have a good chance of living a longer life than a smoker because you will be much healthier than a smoker. Non-smokers also have the ability to taste food better than smokers do because smoking kills taste buds.
We were all warned that smoking is harmful for our bodies. We have heard it all over the place INCLUDING THE MEDIA(not really since they sell them on tv), FROM OUR LOVE ONES, AND FROM EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AVAILABLE AT SCHOOL. However, some people HAS GOTTEN addicted to smoking and have a hard time qutting. Smoking kills an average of 450,000 people each year as I searched in the internet. That is more than car accidents, drunk driving, and illegal substances. So why do people continue to smoke? What causes people to even want to smoke when they know the deadly effects?
If you ever thought of smoking, THEN YOU MIGHT WANT TO THINK AGAIN because smoking is one of the most difficult addictions to break. It kills more people than any disease in the world. Most people who smoke CONTINUE TO do so because OF THIS DEADLY ADDICTION. People like smoking because it makes them feel energized, aware, AND THINK IT MAKES THEM LOOK COOL(WHICH WE ALL KNOW IT REALLY MAKES THEM THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE; A FOOL). Some people may start smoking because they saw someone that they liked OR LOOK UP TO smoking and thought it was cool. Trying it with friends is another reason some people may smoke. Smoking harms almost every organ in your body, which causes many diseases AND EVEN DEATH.
Smoking causes lung cancer heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, and asthma. It also damages teeth, fingers, and YOU hair. Lung cancer is the number one killer in smokers. Some people VISIT their doctor for help on how to quit smoking. TheIR doctor may give(PRESCRIBE?) them medication to help their addiction go away. THE GOOD NEWS IS the minute you stop smoking, your body goes to work to repair much of the damage.
If you’re a non-smoker, you have a good chance of living a longer life than a smoker because you will be much healthier than a smoker. Non-smokers also have the ability to taste food better than smokers do because smoking kills taste buds. IN THE END, IF YOU START THINKING ABOUT SMOKING, THINK AGAIN.
I’m not totally good at editing but I tried fixing the ones I thought needed to be fixed. I even added a few words to some sentences to make them longer but its your choice on what to do.
Also if you need to write more words then you should go into details like how smoking can change a person life drastically in both the workforce and family life. Also write about what they could of bought with the money they used to buy ciggerates(I don’t know how to spell that word)
Overall, this was a pretty decent essay.
