I’m pregnant, can my boyfriends smoking effect the baby?
I’m about 4 monthes pregnant, can my boyfriends smoking effect the baby even though he smokes outside? Can just the scent remaining on him effect my body in any way?

No… but it can hurt the baby once he/she arrives… Even stale cigarette smoke on his clothes can cause the baby to get an ear infection, strep throat, etc.. Encourage him to quit.. It will be good for everyone!

      Congrats on the baby!

What are the effects of smoking during pregnancy on my baby?

    • Anonymous says:

~Decreased birth-weight is directly related to the number of cigarettes you smoke. Babies born to women who smoke are on average 200 grams (8 ozs) lighter than babies born to comparable non-smoking mothers.

~There is a direct relationship between smoking and impaired fetal growth.

~ Decreased lung function of the developing baby, caused by the nicotine that crosses the placenta to the foetus and alters the cells of the unborn child’s developing lungs.

~ Mothers who smoked during, or shortly after pregnancy, raised the chances of their children developing asthma by a third.

~Smoking during pregnacy increases the risk of your baby dying from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or Cot Death when born. The risk of cot death is trebled in infants whose mothers smoke both during and after pregnancy.

~On average, smokers have more complications of pregnancy and labour which can include bleeding during pregnancy, premature detachment of the placenta and premature rupture of the membranes.

~Some studies have also revealed a link between smoking and ectopic pregnancy

~Perinatal mortality (defined as still‑birth or death of an infant within the first four weeks of life) is increased by about one-third in babies of smokers. This is 1900 babies a year in the UK.

~ Nicotine, carbon monoxide, and other chemicals in tobacco smoke are passed on to the baby. A German study showed traces of NNK, (nicotine-derived nitrosaminoketone) which is one of the strongest cancer causing agents found in tobacco products was passed on to babies.

Don’t Forget! There is also a great deal of evidence that men who smoke when their partners are pregnant also affect the baby’s health – whether or not the woman smokes herself.

How can smoking effect your baby if you smoke a cigarette and then nurse two week old infant?
How long does nicotine stay in your body after you smoke a cigarette?

    • Anonymous says:

Nicotine stays in the ‘body’ for about 30 – 90 minutes, that’s why you get the craving for another smoke after a certain amount of time.

You CAN smoke while you breastfeed (just not at the same time). Certainly no smoking in the same room (or better yet some house) as the baby.

If you can’t quit or cut down on your cigs. then smoke immediately after nursing and try not to smoke for 90 minutes before nursing. It’s better to breastfeed and smoke than to breastfeed and give formula, since breastmilk has been shown to reduce or even reverse the damage second hand smoke does to the baby (during pregnancy and afterwards).

The baby may get some cramping and throw up a bit if you smoke directly before nursing and they’re a little more prone to colic.

The risks increases if you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day.

Does smoking marijuana while breatfeeding effect the baby?
I know someone that smokes marijuana and breastfeeds. I was wondering what effects it has on the baby. I think it is terrible, but she doesn’t want to hear me.

The active ingredient in marijuana, THC, will be stored in mom’s fat tissues for long periods (weeks to months) and will build up in the body with continued use. Small to moderate secretion into breastmilk has been documented, and THC is concentrated in human milk. According to Hale, analysis of breastmilk from chronic heavy users indicated an eight-fold concentration in milk compared to mom’s blood plasma, however the dose received by baby was insufficient to produce significant side effects. Studies have shown significant absorption and metabolism in infants, although long term effects have not been shown.

      ,,,,,

One study (Astley and Little, 1990) found that exposure to marijuana through their mother’s milk during the first month of life resulted in decreased motor development at one year of age. In another study of 27 infants evaluated at 1 year of age who were exposed to marijuana via breastmilk (compared to 35 nonexposed infants), no significant differences were found in terms of age at weaning, growth, and mental or motor development. Follow-up of these infants has been limited.

That said, from the few studies we have, MJ does not appear to be really dangerous to an infant, even though small amounts do pass into milk and are ingested by the infant. The amounts in milk are probably not clinically relevant, as they are rapidly dissipated upon absorption and transferred to storage sites in adipose tissue.

In my opinion, marijuana tainted milk is always better than formula, particularly for preterm infants who need the immunological substances found in human milk. The only time a mothers milk might not be suitable is if the mom is a terribly heavy user and immediately after she’s used MJ…and I’m not even sure this is true.

      ___________

It’s a mixed bag when you look at the studies. And it depends on if she smokes around the baby etc.

Thanks to the laws in this country the infant is actually at more risk from cps (and hence being deprived of bm) than from the MJ.

Does Anyone Know The Effects Smoking Marijuana While Pregnant Will Have On The Baby, If Any?
This is a tough subject because since marijuana is illegal (in most places) that there is no offfcial government/medical study on the effects of marijuana smoking on the fetus.

I am not asking for opinions, or whether or not you think it is a good idea but what could you expect to possibly happen if you take in marijuana while pregnant?

There are no effects other than the effects of cigarette smoke. I know this,I did my research into it at one point in time. The only real risk that’s been found is possible low birthweight. I don’t smoke anymore, but I know some women that smoked the whole time they were pregnant, their kids were fine. My mom smoked with me,I’m fine. I’ve not heard of it/found TRUE information on anything but the effects of cigarette smoke, which still isn’t good, but yea, that’s all they’ve found. It’s unclear if there’s anything else. I know they drug test the baby when it’s born, and if it’s found in their system, they remove the child from the mother. Another thing-you opened a can of worms on here, and half these people have NO idea what they’re speaking about. Most studies are done where there are other things that have an effect. Marijuana is a NONCHEMICAL ADDICTING substance,so how they say withdrawl can happen is beyond me.
