Why Quit Marijuana? - The Effects of Marijuana on the Mind
Author: John Mckee
Those who smoke marijuana are familiar with the "high" they feel when they smoke. This article discusses the effects of THC on the brain, as well as the negative effects of heavy marijuana use on the mind.
How does Marijuana Effect the Brain?
THC, the active ingredient in marijuana works on specific parts of the brains hardware, called cannabinoid receptors. Activating a cannabinoid receptor with THC creates a bunch of cellular reactions that eventually create to the "high" that you feel when you smoke weed. Cannabinoid receptors exist throughout the brain. They are most common in parts The areas of the brain that influence pleasure, time, memory, and concentration have the highest conentration of these receptors. Smoking marijuana regularly can overwhelm these receptors and cause some negative mental effects. Studies have shown that frequent marijuana use can rewire the dopamine pleasure receptors in the brain.
What are the Negative Effects of Marijuana on the Mind?
Research has shown that marijuana use lowers memory and other mental functions for up to a couple of days after smoking. If you smoke daily, or more, you may always be functioning at a below normal mental level. Studies have also show a link between weed use and mental problems like anxiety, depression and schizophrenia. The jury is out on whether marijuana causes, influences, even has any affect on these illnesses. If you have ever had a psychotic reaction to marijuana, you are more likely to have a psychotic break later in life than if you smoked and did not have one. Clarity of mind is one of the greatest benefits of quitting weed.
One of the biggest issues I had with my marijuana addiction was how lazy and forgetful I was. The term for this is "amotivational syndrome". People who smoke a lot of weed and are amotivational are what we refer to as "burnouts". Some people can smoke frequently and be functional, some can't. Personally, I believe that amotivational syndrome is marijuana-induced depression.
Do you want to Quit Marijuana?
After smoking marijuana for close to 10 years, one of the main reasons that I wanted to quit was to get my mind back. I feel like a different, better person now that I am not stoned all of the time. Most people can't quit weed because they don't know what to expect, or don't have a plan.

The effects of alcohol & smoking on a coiled brain aneurysm??
My aunt had a aneurysm late 2005 which was coiled. She has however continued to drink and smoke but of late her drinking is out of control. Do we yet know the effects that alcohol & smoking may have on the coil. We were told its anticipated life span was about 10 years. Shes spiralling out of control and I would like some facts to put in front of her.
The brain and heart are some of the vital organs that greatly require oxygenated blood in order to function well.
Smoking narrows the circumference of the veins and arteries. Narrowed blood vessels result in less blood delivery throughout the body.
The neurosurgeon would have discussed the situation prior to and after the surgery including the things to do and avoid. Your beloved aunt is an adult, she knows the effects. Perhaps this is her way of dealing with her condition.
What effects does smoking weed have on the brain? I have an MRI tonight?
Ok I have migraines once in a while and a headache almost everyday (since I was 10, I’m now 17)…I have been diagnosed with Chronic Headache Syndrome, go figure…anyways I spoke to a neurologist and she said its ok if i smoke weed because it helps my headaches…my question is…if I have an MRI tonight and im high during it will it effect the results? I know being high effects your brain and everything but will that cause my doctors to freak out and make me take another MRI? I’m also wondering because its kinda boring in there and it’d be funny to be in there stoned…if your gonna tell me to stop smoking dont waste your time…any answer is appreciated…thanks
man im really not sure… stereotypically it hurts the area of your brain that stores long term memory, im sure you know this, so maybe that may show up but dont ask me how. good luck son, i dont smoke but hope i help
What are the effects of smoking and drinking on the brain, and throat?
Smoking causes the cilia within the lungs to become paralyzed, making it difficult to cough up sputum. Also, smoking causes cancer all along the path it takes to the lungs and back out, thus cancer of the throat is not rare in smokers I’ve cleaned many tracheostomies of patients who have had their larynx removed.
Alcohol, deadens different parts of the brain, from the frontal cortex, which is where judgment is formed, if your judgment is comprimised you begin to assume you are stronger, better, faster etc. than you are, and you presume that you know more, are more attractive etc. You also do things that your inhibitions would have prevented you from doing before you became inebriated, to the cerebellum, which controls motor functions, evetually the brainstem.is affected, this portion of the brain controls respiration, heart rate etc. Death can then happen via alcohol poisoning.
What long term effects does smoking marijuana have on the brain?
Is it true that it kills brain cells? Other than the immediate effects and possible respiratory effects, are there any long term affects on the brain?
I don’t smoke btw
The general scientific consensus is that heavy regular use leads to a small dip in IQ (2-3 points) but returns back to normal after a period of sobriety.
is it possible to repair the bad effects of smoking cannabis on the brain now i have stopped smoking it?
if i add up all the days where i have smoked cannabis it totals to about 9 months as i have had periods of stopping and then starting again. i have now stopped smoking it, now i want to find out if my brain can ever repair itself? i have noticed that my short term memory is now really bad sometimes, does any body know if it can ever go back to its normal self? or ways to help? thanks.
Hi, I use to smoke a lot of marijuana, in total about a year and half eight times per day everyday, my brain was still 16 which means it was still growing. When you smoke it obviously kills many braincells which is the cause of memory loss, When I had to go back to school I had forgotten almost everything that I learnt when I was at school, also I cannot remember what I did when I smoked pot, only the bad experiences, which sucks. But ive been clean for a year and four months now and just recently i can pay better attention in class and I remember more things. The older you get the more braincells you lose, so if you are older now then you cannot get the braincells back that you lost. Lol, it sounds so stupid, but I think it’s true. Anyway, Eat Cod liver oil, atleast a spoon a day, it’s quite tasty, the fish oils helps with memory and etc etc. Also exercise atleast an hour a day since it betters your thinking and memory. eat lots of healthy foods and drink 2 litres of water a day. Dont use anti depressants, that shit is no good. And find activities that excersize your mind.
Good Luck:)
