Time and time again you have heard warnings about cigarette smoking and its ill effects to one's health. Yet, it seems nothing deters a smoker from lighting cigarette after cigarette. Some twenty years ago, a report from the United States Surgeon General states that "Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality in the United States." And this remains true to this day, if not even more so.

In 2008, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention stated that there are 46 million adults in the US who smoke, which is about 20.6% of all adults. Approximately one in every five American is a smoker. Of this number, 23.1% or 24.8 million are men and 18.3% or 21.2 million are women who smoke.

An increase in the number of smokers in the younger age groups has also been noted in the report. People aged 25 to 44 years are more prone to cigarette smoking with 23.7% while those aged 65 and older has only 9.3% who smoke.

Another area of concern is the rising numbers of middle school and high school students who smoke. There are an alarming 20% of high school students nationwide who are smokers in 2007. In a recent survey among middle school students, it showed that 9% were smoking cigarettes.

Half of those who smoke are going to die of this habit and almost half a million people in the US die of tobacco related conditions every year. The truth is cigarette smoking is the top killer of Americans, killing more than the combined numbers of motor vehicle accidents, alcohol, suicide, homicide, and illegal substances. It is also accountable for at least 30% of all deaths related to cancer and nine cases of lung cancer deaths out of each ten can be attributed to smoking.

These are hard numbers; there is simply no disguising the terrible truth about cigarette smoking and tobacco use. Nevertheless, it is also the most preventable cause of premature death, if only smokers heed the warning and quit before it's too late.

Where is a link to an inspirational video to help my husband to quit smoking.?
After 14 years of smoking It’s been three days he has been smoke free. His main reason, among many others, is he is going to be a father. I’m looking for a link, maybe from youtube or something similar that I can show my husband for inspiration when he feels like giving up. Something more along of the lines of so and so dying as a result with a touching story. Or Peter Jennings heart felt story. Stuff with data and statistics does very little. All link will be greatly appreciated. I know they are out there, I saw so many growing up but where are they now.

These are really good tips I have heard to stop smoking. Hope they help.

Because a smoker forms the habit of putting something in their mouth, and it’s like always a cigarette. you will need something else to put into your mouth, like lollipops.

Have a peppermint each time you crave a cigarette, the craving will go away somehow.

Be sure to have lots of water, the nicotine will wash out within 48 – 72 hours. Let’s say, the same amount as some scientist discovered. 6 – 8 glasses a day.

Make sure you get a lot of fresh air and exercise, it will help your brain recover

Have faith. Thinking you can’t do it over and over won’t help.

Remind him that the stuff inside is toxic. It will shorten his life. People don’t want to kiss smokers. Also remind him that many people die from second hand smoke (be dramatic). Smoking’s gross, i’m with you on that.

How can I quit smoking? Where are nice groups and statistics of deaths?
Hello. I smoke about a pack and a half of ciggerettes a day and im 29 yearsold. I been smoking since 15 yearsold
How can I quit smoking completely. I head of people dying at 50 yeasold for smoking. Does that happen often?
Who has the statistics of how many people get cancer that smokes.
I walk down the street and people are smoking like crazy! Its just one guy smoking after another and its the same in the usa as it is in Mexico and other latin american countries. This ciggerette drug goes a long way and seems pretty addictive.
So how many of these people that smoke get cancer and what age do they usually live to?
If I stopped smoking today, would I be able to live untill 100 years old?
What if somebody is 66 years old and they stopped smoking today, would they live to be 100?

I will be waiting for emails.

      Hi

At a high rate like you smoke, it’s very plausible that you could develop a melanoma cancer and die relatively young; some people think life is short and that they should enjoy it to the full, until the bill comes around and they’re diagnosed with a terminal disease like cancer. I’m glad to hear you’ve been thinking about it, though, and that you want to quit. While nicotine is the addictive drug in tobacco products, it’s actually may of the other chemicals in a cigarette that usually cause the cancer. You can read more about quitting and some methods for you to take a look at here: http://smokefreeme.info/

In particular, take a look at the article on nicotine replacement therapy; I think that’s the most relevant to your case. Best of luck!
