How Does The Nicotine Patch Help You Quit Smoking?
Author: Susan Roberts
There are many people who have quit smoking by using the Nicotine Patch. There is no foolproof way to quit smoking, so understanding the pitfalls can make your next quit attempt a successful one!
First, you have to remember to actually apply the patch. This sounds silly, but I've forgotten to put it on a few times, and ended up smoking for another week because of it. Make it part of your morning routine, right after you step out of the shower. I keep a spare in my wallet just in case I forget.
Second, avoid smokers for the first few days. This may work best if you start on a Saturday morning, and keep yourself busy until work on Monday. The first 24-48 hours are the most difficult part of this, since the levels of nicotine in your body are still dropping, even though you have the patch on. After 48-72 hours, nicotine levels in your body (as a result of smoking cigarettes, not the patch) are nearly normal, so you won't feel the cravings like you do during the first few days.
Finally, remember that even if you mess up once, keep going back to it. It took me a ton of tries before I managed to quit, and even then it wasn't exactly an easy process. It was, however, effective in the end.
If you mess up, make sure to take the patch off before you smoke. I've heard plenty of reports of all kinds of bad things happening as a result of smoking with the patch on.

I am looking for help to quit smoking. Like the patch, gum very cheap.?
I am trying to find programs or clinices that help low income people quit smoking. Looking for the smoking patches and the gum plus help in calming me down in the state of west virginia.
It took me six tries. Five were cold turkey, that never worked.
The 6th was done gradually, and it worked. I limited myself to where I could smoke: never around my kids. Then not in my house. Not at work.
Then, not in my car. Finally, the only place I could smoke was outside in my backyard in chilly February. In Canada. Yikes!
Any other time I wanted to smoke at home, I took a bath, or did dishes or went for a walk. Can’t smoke if your hands are underwater, right?
Since I never did get the hang of smoking and walking at the same time… couldn’t do 2 things at once, I guess — that worked. These things helped me spend a few minutes getting to the point where the craving passed.
Also, avoid things you associate with a cigarette; in my case it was coffee and liquor. Had to drink tea and tomato juice for a bit!
Didn’t cost me a cent, took some time, but it worked. I haven’t smoked in 10 years, and I had smoked for 20 years.
Good luck. Best thing I ever did.
what is the best way to quit smoking patch or gum tried cold turkey?
To quit smoking, you can do the following things:
Write down the reasons why you smoke.
Know in which situations you like to smoke best.
You should know these situations very well (for example, when you are having a good time) and start to think of a solution for how you want to deal with that situation. More.
Determine the day you will stop. That can be tomorrow, but you can also wait for a more favourable moment.
Tell the people around you that you are going to quit. Possibly with somebody else.
Take away everything that reminds you of smoking.
Stop radically; it gives you the best chance of success.
Change your eating and drinking habits. Drink a lot of water, eat a lot of fresh fruit and be aware of ‘pleasure drinks’ like coffee, tea and alcohol.
Take care of enough physical relaxation. Go for a walk or a ride or go swimming.
Reward yourself. Do nice things or give yourself something, like a cd or clothes.
If you fall back, don’t give up. Find out in what situation it happened and try to find out with what (alternative) behaviour you can react in the future. If you manage to come through the same situation next time, you have become stronger.
The desire to smoke is one of the first things you notice when you stop smoking. Such a moment lasts a few minutes. It comes, stays for a while and then goes. If you have stopped smoking recently, you will have that desire more often than after a few weeks. After a while, the periods between ‘wanting to smoke’ get longer and longer. Ultimately, the desire to smoke diminishes. Nicotine patches, self-help books and your doctor can help you to stop smoking. Also, health care centres usually have special “quit smoking” programs.
What is better to use to quit smoking, the gum or patch?
My sister went with the pill, “chantix”. She swears by it, while I swear that I will smoke even when I am dead!
How do you quit smoking without using the patch or gum?
I’m thinking about quitting smoking. I know I want to quit within the next 2 years. The only thing is that I really enjoy smoking. I smoke roughly 15 a day. I would like to know how to quit without using the patch or gum. I can’t quit all at once but would like to ease into it by smoking less and less. So what I really need to know also is…
How do you make yourself smoke less?
Get a jar with a lid, put some water in it, add cigarette buts, seal jar. When want to smoke, unseal and inhale the aroma from said jar.
how can i quit smoking without patch, gum, drugs?
I want to quit so bad, im young so there is still time to quit a bad habit. No money for gum or drugs, how can i stop just from behavior?
I work out, but that in no way is a replacement. Exercise is its own subject, and cannot be treated otherwise.
Any suggestions? Or reassurance wold be nice too….
I quit before and several things helped me, one was hard candy ( you can get sugar free if you are worried about the sugar, they are low calorie though ) chewing gum, ice water, and I took up needlework to keep my hands busy. You may want to take up anything that keeps your hands busy that you think would be interesting to you, from whittling wood to macrame to playing guitar. Unfortunately after five years of being smoke free I started again ( long story) and am very sorry I did, now it seems much harder to try to stop. I am much older now and the habit is ingrained – I had quit successfully when I was 20 to 25 years old. So try these and hopefully will help you. Also I took Benadryl at night – sounds weird but helped me sleep very soundly and took the cravings away at night. I only did that for a week or two. It gets easier the longer you do it too, after a month it was no big deal. Best of luck to you and good for you for getting rid of a bad habit.
