Hello. My question is concerning a rental application, of which I was denied approval..?
Im a 27 yr old white/American college student. I applied for a year lease in Phoenix, AZ. Im single, a non-smoker and have no pets in tow. I have adequate income and have provided an adequate rental history going back several years. However, when I was 18 years old (9 years ago) I plead guilty to a felony in N.Y. state. I was an at risk teen whom sufferd terrible abuses at the hands of an inimical NYC child foster care system. Im not irresposible, yet I believe that as a young boy there was a direct corrolation between those circumstances and my run in with the law. Be that as it may, I cannot change the past. However, I changed the course of my life. I will recieve my bachelors degree later this year, I’ve quit drinking several years ago, and I even quit smoking cigaretts! Im very proud of these seemingly small milestones, especially when one considers that I began drinking and druging at age 12. Do you think my lease denial is fair? What can I do? Is there any legal recourse?
It might not be fair. However, a great number of felons *have not* changed their lives. And without a lengthy and expensive background check, it’s hard to know which felons have and which are just going through the motions. There is no legal recourse because felons aren’t offered protection against discrimination. Check with an attorney just to be sure, since in some cases, you don’t have to reveal felonies on some applications. Make sure you aren’t telling them something they don’t need to know.
I know it is frustrating and possibly a flawed system that may lead some back to crime. But unfortunately, it is what it is. You could try asking for an appeal at the rental place. Otherwise, just keep plugging away and find somewhere decent to live.
If you have turned to the good side, I wish you the best of luck.
Mate only wants to have sex with me when he’s stoned…Potheads please confess!?
My mate only wants me when he’s high and that’s the only time he shows me any love or attention. When he’s sober, he looks miserable, pissed off and my child and I just seem like we’re in the way. When he’s out of pot, he’s making calls–trying to find all his pothead friends–this man just turned 35 and is pissed that his job sucks–he’s a carpenter cuz he CAN’T pass any tests for regular jobs. I have a good job and I don’t smoke pot–that was ages ago and once I had my kid, I was done. I do take anti-depressants/anti-anxiety meds but that’s to cope with my depression over being in this situation. Is it me? I keep thinking I’m not good enough and we never have enough money but he spends so much money on porn and pot.–he’s been addicted for over 20 years, no plan 2 quit–was stoned every milestone of our life 2gether. He claims to love me/sleeps on the couch. I’m starting to think I’m better off alone. he never shows up 4 my kid’s school functions-ppl think I’m a single mom.
Why isn’t recovery proportionate to how long you smoked?
I just quit smoking after about 10 years, and I’m reading about the “milestones” that an ex-smoker has to look forward to, such as heart attack rate being cut in half, etc… but I’m wondering how such a generalization can be made, as it would seem to me that someone who had smoked for 30 years would recover much more slowly than someone who had smoked for 5. Am I right or are all smokers equal regardless of how long they’ve been smoking?
The benefits and statistics are based on the average smoker if I am correct. It doesn’t mean that someone with emphysema will bounce back as fast as a light smoker of a few years.
Is anyone else on a milestone for quitting smoking?
I had a spontaneous pneumothorax ( Collapsed lung ) 6 months ago. We don’t know why..but one thing was for sure. I’m 20 years old and smoking cigarettes was not going to be a reason for it happening again. I quit that day..well I was in the hospital over night with a chest tube so, I quit the next day. I haven’t touched a smoke since! I did have another spontaneous pneumothorax one month later, still unsure of the cause.. but I’m breathing better now!!
Anyone else reach a SMOKE FREE MILESTONE? How has it changed you? Do you miss smoking? Tell me your happy story! AND CONGRATULATIONS!!
on September 22 2000 I quit. I never looked back. I am so much happier and healthier without those cancer, wrinkle , congestion causing things!!!
I had No withdrawal symptoms– only more oxygen for my life!
I always tell everybody it is a miracle that made me stop those infernal cigs.
I wish you health
Website to help quit smoking?
I knew someone ages ago who used a great website to help her quit smoking. It was just an online community, not one pushing products. There were forums and when you logged in it would tell you how long it’s been since you last smoked, and you’d get little virtual rewards when you hit certain milestones. But I can’t remember the website, does this ring a bell with anyone?
You know what? I managed to find the website I was after.

Now, let’s see if it’s as good as I remember…
