      No. Valerian root is prepared from a native North American herb, Valerianus oficinalis. Valium generic name “diazepam”), on the other hand, is a “benzodiazepine”, a synthetic sedative and skeletal muscle relaxant. They are both sedative, but they have different mechanisms of action. Valerian root has no skeletal muscle effect, and does not interfere with memory like Valium. I don’t know of any study that has shown that people become dependent upon or addicted to valerian, but it happens that people do become dependent upon benzodiazepines. The effect of valerian root is not made worse if taken with alcohol, the same is NOT true of Valium.
      Both are sedative, both have anti-seizure activity, but the two are chemically quite different and have different safety profiles.

    Is there a natural supplement that mimics Xanax?
    I know that Valerian Root offers some of the effects of Valium, so I’m sure there are plenty of natural supplements in prescription drugs. I’ve had to take Xanax on occasion and it works for me, but I’d prefer to take something natural. Any help out there?

      There is nothing that I know of that is legal that mimics Xanax exactly… St. Johns Wort works ok for anti-depressant and anti-anxiety… but it’s nothing like Xanax. Sorry, I WISH there was something!

    I have a sleep disorder?
    I have this little/gigantic problem. While most people seem to just pick up the covers to their bed, slide under them, lay their head down on a pillow and gently get wisked away to lala land. I am the complete opposite. For me, though I love to sleep, it seems to absolutely loath me!

    I am currently so desperate that I drink myself to sleep, night after night…and this is coming from a guy who prefers to not drink when going out, or i might have a beer or two while socializing for hours at a bar. I first throw down a few shots late at night, then if I dont feel the tiredness, I throw down a few more, until i do. Then finally, when I feel wasted, I climb into bed, sleep for about 4 hours, wake up, and can even need to go and have a shot or two more to get more sleep.

    I do not want to take prescriptions, as I have heard bad things about many of the medications, and something like valium is very intense and cannot/should not be used every night. I have tried Valerian root, and that too has no effects on me…tylenol PM or over the counter sleep aids, are totally too weak for me, and i see how they work, they send a little wave of sleepiness my way, and if i dont catch that wave, i become more restless that i was before I took them.

    Listening to relaxing music is impossible, as any sort of sound while trying to sleep cranks me up, not lays me down.

    So please, any sort of natural remedy, aside from taking a hammer to my head would be very welcome advice.
    Well i happen to be 300 miles from home at the moment..and at a job that loves to throw random tests…so the weed thing is kinda out of the question to…besides it actually wakes up my mind rather than put it down.

      Unfortunately, alcohol is a temporary fix for your sleep problem. You probably already realize that. Alcohol may put you to sleep, but the sleep is very restless and not all refreshing. That is why people wake up after a few hours. Sometimes they feel the need for even more alcohol. It’s a vicious circle, and in the long run you are hurting your body. Sorry, I dont mean to preach to you. I am just reminding you of something you already know.

      Below is a long list I once wrote about ways to fall asleep. The list is so long that reading it might put you to sleep :-)

      A warm bath is a great way to help you to sleep (depending on the season). If you can’t take a bath, you can give yourself a foot massage with slightly warm massage oil, sesame oil, or castor oil from a health food store.

      A helpful technique is to relax your body one part at a time. So you could relax your feet, your lower legs, upper legs, moving up from your lower belly up to your chest, etc., until your whole body is relaxed.

      Of course, guided relaxation methods can help. As vividly as possible, imagine yourself at the beach, in the mountains or country, or whatever is most soothing to you.

      If you have annoying thoughts that run through your mind when you are trying to sleep, you might have to talk to a counselor or therapist about that.

      I know you said you did not like to listen to music in bed, but consider these suggestions. If the music is too loud, of course it will disturb you. If it is too low, it will have no effect. I found that music alone did not help. Hearing a relaxing voice also did not help. However, the combination of voice and music is very soothing, especially if you don’t play it too loud. At least it worked for me. You might try it out. Many of these CDs are available on eBay for very low prices. On eBay, do a search for “hypnosis sleep.”

      There are herbs that might help you to sleep, eg, valerian root, kava kava, chamomile, hops, passion flower, skullcap. Probably, valerian root and kava kava are the best. However, what most people don’t realize is that it can take at least a FEW WEEKS for some herbs to build up in your system before they start to work.

      The minerals calcium and magnesium might be helpful for sleep. You can also try 5-HTP or melatonin. I would not take melatonin for over a month unless your doctor says it is ok.

      If all of the methods above do not work, you might have to try LOW doses of sleep medication, at least for a few weeks. I agree with you that valium is way too strong. However, there are prescription sleeping pills that are much weaker than valium. If you want more info on sleep meds, send me an email and I can offer suggestions. Remember I am just talking about a low dose of a sleeping pill on a very short term basis. Soon your body may get used to sleeping at a normal schedule, and you won’t need the pills.     i take valerian root to improve my sleep and quite a few articles have described the valerian root as the natural non chemical version of valium. i can see the two are related, they both help with sleep orders, but is the valerian root as strong as valium?

      Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) is a moderate hypnotic herb. What that means is that it will help you get off to sleep if you’re already sleepy. It is not a sedative. The major action of this herb related to sleep is binding GABA-A receptors and inhibiting GABA breakdown, thereby decreasing CNS activity.

      Valerian absolutely IS related to valium, in that valium also effects GABA levels in the brain. And because of the effects on GABA and the CNS, valerian root can be used to manage withdrawal from benzodiazepam and diazepam derivatives.

      Valium is a diazepam derivative. This is a potent sedative and it also works by potentiating GABA effects in the brain (though via a somewhat more robust mechanism.)

      Both have their associated risks… but Valerian root is MUCH less potent than Valium. And the risks associated with valium are MUCH more significant, happen at smaller dosage and happen with more frequency. Also, valium is quite addictive, whereas developing a dependency on valerian root is really rare.
