Author: Penny Harrison
Coughing is an essential action to help clear the airways and throat. However, there are instances wherein cough suggests a symptom of an underlying condition usually obstruction in the respiratory tract. Coughing is a clear skin that the body is functioning properly because of the fact that it can defend the body from irritants coming from the lungs, throat, and other structures in the respiratory tract. There are times when coughing is caused by environmental irritants like smoke, dust, and other allergens.
In ayurveda, cough is termed as Kaasa roga, a Kapha (water) illness, a common problem caused by irritation or stress of the Kapha Dosha. In this belief, it is caused by poor digestion wherein the food not properly absorbed by the body is changed into ama (Ayurveda: mucus). This ama combined with different motions and passages causes cough upon reaching the respiratory system.
Based on the ayurvedic theory there are five varieties of cough namely kaphaja, pittaja, vataja, kshayaja, and kshataja. Each type of cough has its own identifying characteristics, causative factors, and their own treatment depending on what caused the coughing.

Parasomnia – any practical advice?
Has anyone got any practical advice or natural remedies to help get quality REM sleep?
All the experts and sleep clinics have done is proudly identify the predicament for me but have no real solutions to overcome this insurmountable problem. Things that have been tried so far: hypnosis – diet – herbal teas – exercise – drugs beta blockers histamines valium codeine – relaxation CDs like hemi-sync – nothing works. This is really impacting into the quality of my life.
The parasomnia came first – it exisited long before 20 years or more than the time that I ever toook various drugs to cure it. It is NOT the result of the drugs. I dont take anything for it now havent for some time in fact – still have the problem. Yes have tried many natural remedies. I have only had two answers to this so I dont hold out much hope.
figure out of you have anything on your mind that’s bothering you and talk it out. Figure out what’s taking your REM sleep, is it noise, is it a too-warm or too stuffy room, is it too much light from the window, is it noisy neighbors, is it that someone else sleeps in your room, is it someone who slams their door as the go to work about 5am that wakes you, etc. Fix all those things and then take some cold milk, lay down, say a prayer and ask for good sleep, then start to put yourself by starting at your feet and tell them all is calm now and they are allowed to go to sleep, then mentally say that to your knees, to your hips and all the way upward. By the time you get half way up your body you should be sleeping. I use hypnosis tapes. Most times I can’t get past the first sentence on the tape and I’m asleep. For some reason the hypnosis tape throws me into immediate REM, I just conk out and wake up refreshed. Try it. I’m thinking that you’ve filled yourself with so many drugs, noise, caffeine, and excitement that for sure you can’t sleep now.

I am suffering from chronic constipation and bloating, What should i do?
Over the past year ive been suffering from constipation and bloating, my guts feel rock solid, an xray confirmed this to be true. Im crammed full. The docs just said its ibs and to take laxatives, they recommended a homeopatic remedy, and to just eat well. They were very unbothered by my desperation. At the hospital they said i should get my doctor to prescribe me valium. But he said no. im scared to go back now. I can get stressed i know this can contribute. I think im suffering from irrational fears over me dying from my appendix bursting, or twisted intestines, or my pancreas doing something, anything, or cancer. Im scared, it effects my life dramatically. I dont want to take medications that doctors give, i dont want to overload my body with more chemicals and complications. Any suggestions on what i could do. I dont know if its because i eat too much fibre, too little. Herbal teas do nothing, that remedy did nothing, the laxatives cause twice the gut upset. they hardly work!
I feel for you! I have the same exact problem—IBS with C
I have found some relief and I can help you. First ask your doctor for a prescription of Ativan 0.5 to help relieve the spasms and anxiety that goes along with it. What I am going to suggest is to relax and try 1-2 cloves of fresh garlic everyday with your meals and Papain (which helps with the digestion process very well)
Also if you are very constipated in the morning then take Vitamin C 1000 mg to start and increase the dose until your stools become lose. Make certain that you are drinking a lot of fluids. Another helpful product is Activia! Yes it does work and try it every day and you will see an improvment. Make sure that you have a “quiet time” every morning so you can calm down and have a normal movement.
If you are very constipated I would suggest you go on a fruit diet for the first day to detox your body and then resume a diet with vegetables, olive oil, raw garlic, and papaya extract with your meals. You obviously need to cleanse your digestive tract very well. Believe me all this works and alot of it is trial & errror. I absolutely know how you feel. Take care and best of luck!
PS. T o get rid of gas & bloating try Turmeric and Fennel after your meals! It definately works and they are safe!
Herbals or conventional meds—-what is more effective against depression and anxieties?
I suffer from depression and anxieties, and now I am seriously thinking about taking meds. The thing is, I don’t know whether shall I take herbals (such as St.John’s wort, lavender essential oil, chamomile tea, etc) or conventional meds (such as Valium, Klonopin, Lexapro, etc). I personally believe in the philosophy of natural healing and want to try the herbals and am a little scared about chemical effects of conventional meds but I’d been told that conventional meds are really helpful and will help me a lot better.
So I ask you: what is more effective—-herbals or conventional meds?
It really depends on what kind of validation you’re looking for. Hard Western Science (Ie double blind tests) or Anticdotial and non-double blind studies etc. There’s pros and cons for both.
The DBTs make general statements over a population and don’t focus an individual. The non-double blind do just the oppositee.
Best bet would be to talk to your doctor, tell him that you’reinterestedd in seeking a more natural way to deal with your depression and why you want to do it. Give him good solid reasons for why you want to avoid the mood stabilizerss ect, and then the two of you do research into the supplements together. If you need help with that check out the last link.
How to stop feeling anxious?
I have been feeling anxious and having panic attacks for the last 5 years now, I have tried everything but nothing helps, Diazapam helps a bit but its still there, I always have a tightness in my chest and a feeling like butterflies in my chest, I don’t know how to deal with it, it really is driving me mad. I feel like i am going to have a heart attack at any minute, please can anyone help me? I have tried meditating, green tea, herbal tea, its like my brain is in overload with thinking going on all the time and the more i think about it the worse it gets, I need someone to help me, doctors have prescribed Valium and anti-depressants, I even went to a Psychologist but that didn’t help, what is wrong with me?
Before you leave your job, have a full medical. There are a few medical conditions that have symptoms of anxiety; such as high blood pressure, thyroid problems, palpitations, or renal problems; just to name a few. Ask for a blood test.
Also, if there is something troubling you in your deep subconscious it can come out like anxiety; think of a kettle sitting on a hot stove, eventually it will boil over, even if you pretend it’s not there.
Finally, some types of depression can cause anxiety.
Don’t make any big life decisions until you look into these possibilities.
