How long does it take to become addicted to Valium (Diazepam)?
I took it for 2 and half wks for severe alcohol withdrawal, starting at 30mg a day then down to 20mg for a few days and then down to 10mg a day- i would take it usually in the morning, lunch and dinner and my last few days i was using 2mg tabs-the white ones. Silly as it seems it totally ‘cured’ my anxiety i also suffer terribly with and out of everything i have tried this totally make me feel on a level again-like i was when i was younger – im 36 now… I asked the doctor for more but she refused saying that did not want to replace one addiction with another….which is true as i was finding myself after only 1 WEEK, looking at the clock and thinking ‘ oh goody, its nearly Valium time’!…and then 20 mins later, that warm chilled out feeling is there and then everything ok….Ive even ‘missed’ taking it – (as in missed the feeling it gave me) as ive stopped now and my anxiety has returned.. (I havnt taken it for 2 wks now)I have even been looking on line to see where i can buy it – bad idea i know…if anyone has similar experiences drop me a line, id be very interested and grateful for any recommendations of a more modern prescription drugs that the doctor WILL give me – she has given Citalopram??? Ive heard quite a few horror stories to take it so , the box.remains unopened….Thanks in advance…:)
Hi all – many thanks for all answers so far-very helpful and clearly i need to stay the hell away from Valium-much as it was nice to take-thats why its so addictive. I was in hospital when i was given Diazepam as i cant take Librium as ive had it b4 and i became extremely aggitated on it- which was weird…Ill give the SSRI a whirl – if i dont get on with it i can try annother..PS i noticed also i would get quite a bad ‘hangover’ effect from Valium too so another reason to stay away….thansk to all- it reassuring to know there are others that have been thru the same…x
i was halfway through giving you what i deemed good advice when my answer was deleted. Therefore I will edit. Forget Valium its a Son of a B….. extremely addictive and your tolerance levels (withing 2 wks) will soon outway the pros Ask your doc for Chlordiazapoxide (librium) which will/can help with alcochol withdrawl. In conjunction with that there is another medication called antibuse which will make you throw up if taken with alcohol. Georgie Best had antibuse pellets stapled to his stomach. Where is the guy now? Will power is a great incentive and rehab, albeit hard, can help you with your problem. Please dont substitute your alcohol intake with “downers”. Its simply that – a substitute. But make sure your doc supervises you. I pray for you. I know what you are going through. Please, please, please make an appt with your GP asap x
how much Valium taken counts as a habit?
in coming off tramadol – i’ve taken diazepam (Valium) for about a month. I take 2 tablets per night – but only about 2-3 times in a week. its to get me relaxed enough to sleep.
Does this count as addiction ? are there better, safer drugs to take. i don’t feel particularly bad the next morning – no shakes or itches (like tramadol).
I just dont want to substitue one drug for another and coming off tramadol by itself was no picnic!!
The valium are 10mg and I take 2 a night – I am a v light smoker < 5 a week and hardly drink. How much damage would you estimate I was doing to myself . Im in my mid 30s and weigh 65 kgs (5’9′)
thanks

Well my guess is that if you were taking tramadol you are a sufferer of pain. Is the diazepam to help you relax and sleep because of pain? It doesn’t sound at all like you have a problem. If you take the medication in large amounts, on a daily basis, or take it when you don’t need it you have an addiction. It’s ok when you are treating pain or anxiety…that’s what it there for.
Do not worry many people who take narcotics would rather suffer from pain than take them on a regular basis and their reasoning was because the feel guilty or are afraid of becoming an addict. The meds are there for treatment. If you find you are taking more than prescribed or taking it uncontrollably or to deal with emotional problems that’s when the problem occurs.
And FYI…it is possible to take something regularly enough to become physically addicted to it without actually BEING and addict. If it concerns you it’s always good to call your Doctor to discuss it since he’s the one who knows what’s going on and can switch meds for ya…I hope that helps.
How likely is an allergic reaction to Valium?
So the dentist gave me four Valium to help with the anxiety before a root canal, but I am a medicine phobe and hate taking anything for any reason really.
So my question is how likely is it for someone to have an allergic reaction to diazepam / Valium? I know that Valium has been around for a really long time and people take it in excess of 30 years with no physical side effects aside from addiction and dependence. I’m still concerned though. Thanks!
Slim to none. Your dentist had to go to school as long as your physician did. They would know if you had any odd condition that would predispose you to any problem. As you said its been around long enough that they know enough about it to avoid that prob. Sounds like you have some anxiety issues and that might explain why they wrote the script for 4 . just take it and relax. You cant live your life in fear.
How can I help my boyfriend cope?
My partner has mental health issues. He is 23 and currently under the observation of the Early Intervention Team (UK)
who are undertaking the very long process of assessing him. So far he hasn’t been fully diagnosed. They’ve just said ‘a form of psychosis’, and it’s going to take time.
He suffers from anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations (audio & visual). His nerves are shot, he’s extremely jumpy, very short tempered and snaps at everything. His mood swings are almost impossible to keep up with. He is also very recently sober he spent 2 weeks in a detox clinic for alcoholism and was released just over a month ago. It was important he got sober for the obvious reasons. The main one at the time though was to insure a accurate assessment of his mental health.
The alcohol was his crutch. His coping mechanism, and now thats been removed he’s cracking. He’s about 5 minutes away from picking up the bottle. And I don’t think *I* can handle that. I’m his only support and his carer. His family are not a option. His father is the spawn of satan. His mother is a basket case and they’re currently going through a very messy divorce which has impacted my boyfriend massively.
His GP won’t prescribe anything because of his history of addiction. The only option was diazepam (valium) but it being a addictive short term medication the GP decided against it.
He’s going to end up drinking again and hurt himself or someone else (he has rather violent tendencies, though never towards me)
I need to do something soon.
make get addicted to something good work hard with him stay calm around him be patient be a mom and a partner to him…get him in to something he used be majorily interested in ..something he enjoys doing thats positive…therapy is the best depending if u partners agrees to it just stay calm and pray for him pray alot
