Dangers of Smoking and How to Stop it
Author: IYAOMOLERE AYODELE OLADAPO
If you are a smoker or you associate with people that smoke, you need to know that tobacco use is one of the most important causes of heart attack globally. In today's modern world, tobacco use is the most important risk factor producing a greater relative risk in persons under the age of fifty than those over fifty.
Smoked or chewed, first-hand or second-hand, all kinds of tobacco, in whatever form they are used, cause heart attacks and there is more than enough evidence to prove that tobacco use increases other adverse health conditions.
Dangers of tobacco smoking are particularly severe and while it is often very difficult to think of ways in which tobacco use is beneficial, it is all too easy to mention the ways in which it is a health hazard. To be exact, all forms of tobacco use, including different types of smoking and chewing of tobacco and inhalation of second-hand smoke are potentially hazardous and should be discouraged.
On its own, cigarette smoking is as widespread and significant as a risk factor that it has been described as "the leading preventable cause of disease and death". Second-hand smoke may be even more dangerous than previously thought. The fact is that smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and has negative health impacts on people at all stages of life. It harms unborn babies, infants, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly.
Besides containing addictive nicotine, cigarette smoke contains chemicals which damage the lungs and other parts of the respiratory system and increases the risk of development of cancer of the lungs and respiratory system.
Research shows that there are at least sixty chemicals in cigarette smoke that are cacogenic. Cigarette and tobacco smoke contain highly toxic chemicals like carbon monoxide, ammonia, formaldehyde, arsenic and cyanide which are all produced as cigarette burns.
Tobacco smoke raises blood pressure but decreases the circulation of oxygen to the brain and body. Cigarette smoking is also a significant risk factor for other various disorders, including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, stroke, and osteoporosis and contributes to early menopause. Smoking has been linked to cancer of the lungs, mouth, esophagus, pancreas, kidney, bladder and cervix.
Smoking is associated with higher levels of chronic inflammation, another damaging process that may result from oxidative stress. Smokers have a higher risk of developing a number of chronic disorders including fatty buildups in arteries, several types of cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (lung problems). Atherosclerosis (buildup of fatty substances in the arteries) is a chief contributor to the high number of deaths from smoking.
The dangers of smoking cannot be exhaustively explained. To really stop smoking, you must always ask yourself the reason why you are about to light up that cigarette. If you find out that it's got no sensible reason, DROP IT.

If smoking is being banned in so many places because of its dangers to others (those of use who choose NOT to?
smoke but are subjected to the poisonous fumes dare we go into public) then why is it legal for parents to smoke around their kids? Isn’t that some sort of child endangerment or abuse?
Having said that I think of my 28 year old scar from a hernia I got at 8 weeks old due to my bronchitis being aggravated from both of my parents chain smoking around me. I coughed so hard and for so long that my little body got a hernia. Thanks mom and dad.
I guess ching wong foo has some issues they need to deal with…f’ing psycho.
I dont see why people even need to start smoking. They say it relieves stress, but in actual life doesn’t it just cause stress. Look at it this way, when people get stressed they are like I want a cigarette, and when they dont get one, they go of the wall like some hungry baby. I believe smoking in all essence should be outlawed. It does not do anything for the human race but cause problems, big problems like cancer. If you see those commercials, they should give you a better understanding. Like the large majority of people who die from smoking. I do not believe parents should be aloud to smoke around their children because they are giving the message that it is okay to smoke, and most likely when those children are teenagers they will pick up a cigarette and be addicted for life. There are also many health problems that go along with smoking and little children should not be exposed to those sorts of things, especially when they have no choice. But on the other hand it would be really hard for the government to regulate the whole smoking and children thing. But sadly enough American parents nowadays are a little bit of a let down.
Should cigarette smoking around children be banned?
I was ahead of my time when it came to realising the true dangers of cigarette smoking – when my eldest boy tried it at school I caned him and he thanks me for that today as neither he nor his brothers ever took it up and became addicted and are healthy young men today.
My daughter-in-law doesn’t smoke either yet her Mother does and my grandsons ask me about it because they see her smoking and think that it is something adults *may* do even though I tell them how harmful it is.
Don’t you think that my daughter-in-law should tell her Mother not to let my grandsons see her smoking (let alone telling her to give up the filthy habit for her own sake)?
Best wishes,
Joan.
Yes, if the children can see her smoking then that means she is smoking around them. They are being exposed to her second hand smoke and as a mother of three and a non-smoker I would forbid my children from going over there if she did not stop smoking near them or where they could see it.
As for the 1st remark I would hope people were not allowing children to drink alcohol or coffee. Smoke is different even though they arent smoking it they are breathing it in.
Can someone tell me why parents still smoke infront of their children when they know passive smoking can kill?
I cannot understand why any loving and considerate , caring parent would want to risk their child/ children’s health by smoking in front of them.
Also, why do pregnant women still smoke when they know the dangers to their unborn child?
fair enough it is hard to give up smoking. but surely having a little life growing inside of you is enough to stop. i used to smoke – not a huge amount – but as soon as i found out i was pregnant i stopped straight away. i have had the odd craving but resisted as my unborn child is dependent on me to keep her healthy. i have not had any alcohol either even though i am allowed to have two glasses of wine a week i chose not too as my child is more important. Nurse L – i have many friends who got free patches and gum when they were pregant from the NHS so pregnant women must be able to use them! Neon Green Sugar – considering you are a straight A student then surely you have the brains to figure out that your mum is just making things up to excuse her habbit and think that you will belive her and not worry, there is no way on this earth that she can smoke for 42 years and have perfect lungs! and that second hand smoke is not real!! if it was not real then why do people die from passive smoking!! that is pure selfishness too – innocent people who do not smoke die of a smoking disease! i think any woman whether trying for a baby or gets caught out should give up straight away – if they do not then they lie when they say they are a loving caring mother who loves their children more than anything – that is a lie if they can not give up a selfish habbit for another human being. they are too selfish to have children in the first place. i could go on forever about how selfish i think it is! i used to work in a shop and the amount of times a child will say to their mum or dad “i am hungry can i get something to eat” the parent would say “no, i do not have enough money and anyway we will be home in a couple of hours…..can i have a pack of 20 B&H please?” putting a cigarette infront of a child who is hungry!! SELFISH!! parents who can not afford things for their children, food, school trips etc because they spend about £100 a week on fags!! i am also glad of the ban in pubs and restaurants. my mum smoked with all four of her pregancies and yes we are all healthy but it is not the point. my mum knows how i feel about her smoking but choses not to listen – i call her selfish. she is not allowed to smoke around me or my 4 year old – she has actually started smoking outside the home now so my 9 yr old sister is not inhaling it all the time so at least that is something. my dad used to smoke but when his dad died of lung cancer caused by smoking he stopped straight away with no hesitation as he did not want to die a slow painful death and his children would not be without a dad – that is true caringness!! lung cancer is not going to get every smoker but it is a big chance. my nans best friend died of lung cancer 15 years after giving up as it takes about 20yrs to get it out of your system! i know this has turned into an answer more about smoking in general but it really winds me up at how selfish smokers are!! i def will not be taking up the habbitt again!
Has President Elect Obama made cigarette smoking “cool” again?
The federal government has spent millions of tax payer dollars to educate the public (especially children) about the dangers of smoking. They have outlawed billboards advertising cigarettes and they have outlawed TV ads promoting cigarettes. Millions of dollars were awarded to families who lost loved ones to cigarette related illnesses. Now, the leader of the free world engages in a life-threatening pastime that no amount of basketball playing can undo. Obama captured the attention of the youth of America by being trendy and cool. Has he made smoking “cool” again?
George-good answer. I hope you’re right.
Nothing is cool about smoking and it’s bad for lungs and causes cancer. He for the sake of his children stop. Smoking they say makes him think and what else would you think he would be smoking to think.
Children around relatives that smoke?
I’ve heard about how secondhand smoke can hurt children if they are continuously around people who smoke. What about children whose parents don’t smoke, but have relatives that do. For example, a child whose parents take him/her to visit relatives that smoke. The relatives don’t smoke inside while the child is in there, but the inside of the house smells of cigarettes and their clothes smell the same as the house. They only visit these relatives around once a month. How much danger is the child in and should the parents stop taking their child to visit these relatives until the relatives stop smoking?
Regarding how they smell like smoke after coming inside, they smoke one or two outside and then come inside.
Also, the relatives are heavy smokers when the child is not there. Also, regarding my previous addition, it is the relatives that smoke outside of their house.
My father smoked 3 packs a day around my sister and I, plus we had 3 grandparents smoke around us too. We turned out normal healthy kids. Don’t listen to the lab rats or the non smokers. They’re just paranoid.
