Some people do have bad side effects, but most people seem to be OK. I took it for 6 months, double the usual time, and I just had some nausea and vivid dreams. Since it’s the most effective stop smoking medication, in my opinion people shouldn’t rule it out *unless* they have a history of depression or suicidal ideation, because the risk from the Chantix (mostly suicide) is probably a lot lower than continuing to smoke. Of course, if someone does have serious side effects, you should stop and mention them to your doctor.

Champix/Chantix experiences- side effects, length of treatment, any success…?
I live in the UK and have been prescribed Champix (Chantix in the USA) to stop smoking. I have read all about it and know of the side effects and so on but was wondering if anyone here could tell me their personal experiences. Did you suffer from side effects, did you take it for 12 weeks (or less or longer) and has it worked for you?

    Thanks x

Hope it works for you,I personally would not take it.It does cause thoughts of suicide, anxiety, heart palpation’s and can bring on Heart attack.I know 2 people who suffered the worse side effects and quit after 6 weeks.

Has anyone else suffered from hair loss (Alopecia Areata) after taking Champix/Chantix?
It isn’t mentioned in the ‘possible side effects’ section but I have a found a number of cases on the internet. Within a month of starting Champix (Chantix in USA) I noticed a large bald spot on my chin and now one year on I have lost approximately 50% of my head hair and have almost no beard!

It is not a listed side effect of Champix.
      Causes of Alopecia Areata
There are several different hypotheses as to what causes alopecia areata. Genetic factors seem to play an important role since there is a higher frequency of a family history of alopecia areata in people who are affected. Alopecia areata appears to also have an autoimmune factor causing the patient to develop antibodies to different hair follicle structures. Certain chemicals that are a part of the immune system called cytokines may play a role in alopecia areata by inhibiting hair follicle growth. Some studies show that emotional stress may also cause alopecia areata.
If you look at the side effects listed on…

      alopecia isn’t mentioned there either.
Could the reason be either genetic or stress caused by …
      # Nausea is the most common side-effect, usually in the first few weeks of treatment. It should improve as you continue to take the tablets.

      # Other common side-effects include headache, difficulty sleeping, abnormal dreams, increased appetite, taste changes, dry mouth, drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness, and gut disturbances such as constipation, diarrhoea or indigestion.

Champix (USA – Chantix) and depression problems? Help!?
I really want to give up smoking and last night went to a smoking cessation class where they suggested I go onto Champix as it has really good results and is the new wonder drug with giving up nicotine.

However, I’m really worried as I have read that it has been related to suicide, depression and psychosis!
At the moment i’m a bit low in mood (wouldn’t say its depression though) and i’m worried how it’ll effect me, but at the same time i’m desperate to give up the fags! I’ve tried patches and they only work for a short period of time for me.

I also had a look on yahoo answers at previous comments people had made about Champix and one person said they lost their job and their life just got so messed up which they’ve attributed to Champix! they say not to take Champix if you’re depressed which is why I mentioned my low mood at the moment.

Any one got any advice from their own or someone else’s experience?

I used Champix to quit smoking. I have stayed quit now for a year. I would approach with great caution, particularly when you say you’re already in low mood. I personally don’t think they should be prescribed to people who’re a bit low or depressed. I lost my brother 2 years ago and wanted to quit smoking, i was still grieving him when i quit and my mood and head was all over the place. Understandably.

At first, i felt really euphoric, this lasted for a few months and then i noticed my moods change for the worse. I got really moody, found myself getting snappy and i split with my then boyfriend after 8 months. I also felt like i didn’t want to live, which is so not like me and although grieving, i knew i didn’t want to end up in a grave myself. I was on Champix for 7 months.

Longer than the standard 12 week course but the nurse said to me i had greater chance of quitting if i continued with the course. I had been smoking 15 years so i believed her and continued taking them. My moods worsened, i starting becoming paranoid, snapped a lot at my then boyfriend and could feel a rage within me i’d never experienced before.

My advice, take care whilst taking them. This is a very powerful drug and if you feel like something isn’t right. Stop taking them. It’s not worth it. I have only just started to feel normal again and i only stopped taking the drug November ’08. So who knows how long it takes for the drug to clear out our bodies. I will be very careful what goes into my body in future.

      Good luck.

Has Anyone experience of Champix (Chantix in USA)?
I am on day three of Champix the first and second day I felt kind of bloated and a little nauseous and kind of fuzzy (not tired just fuzzy) but this morning I took the tablet and ten minutes later I threw up – I have not had the bloated feeling but my head still a bit fuzzy.

Have I thrown up the tablet? how long is it before you feel you do not want a cigarette? Does it just make you feel sick when you have one. Any experiences you can tell me would be helpful.
